Go to shops and play as many as you can in your price range. eBay and Gumtree for local stuff, plus adverts in local music/guitar shops and studios, then go and play what's available. Buying any guitar on a recommendation is a little like getting into an arranged marriage: you may find bliss, but you're just as likely to get something that you have no affinity with. It's especially so with an acoustic instrument. Play as many as you can get your hands on and buy the one you most like the feel and tone of. Even a beginner will 'know' their guitar when they hear it.

Wot ^^^ he said.

£400 is good money, you'll find a lovely guitar for that. I've got a Tanglewood Sundance that was around that price, all wood 😉

I'd recommend trying before you buy. Find a dealer with a broad selection and go in on a weekday (less busy) and try a load out. As for makes there are some great guitars coming out of China and the far eastthese days. Brands I'd look at are Guild (GAD range), Recording King, Blueridge, Freshman, Cort and Tanglewood. Most of these are probably made in the same factory. Where possible go for solid wood construction over laminate and look at things such as saddles and nuts made of bone. If you can stump up a bit extra get a hard case. Oh and on a personal note don't go for an acoustc guitar with a cutaway they are pointless and look sh*t.

I got my Taylor magazine through the post today. They dont make bad guitars. You might pick one up for £400.

i would say go into a shop and play ones in your price range [ 300-500] without knowing the price and pick your favourite.

Like a bike it is personal choice

A few years back i bought a takamine nashville from ebay in the US and shipped it over.. with VAT i think it cost about £550 for a £1100 guitar (this was when we were getting about £1 = $2ish tho).
I very nearly bought a cole clark from australia as they are just amazing.
