on shirts - is it considered casual or just a collar style?
Not just a collar. The buttons are placed differently , so that you can leave the top (not collar) undone, with ut it looking too open necked
Look absolutely cheap, nasty & shite IMHO...
A decent shirt should never have them.
You need collar stiffeners, and a cut away collar FTW!
Only at weekends and NEVER with a tie. EVER.
only ever wear with a tie if you hold a US passport
STW for fashion advice? With our reputation?
Button down collars and skinny ties are in fashion at the moment.
But as always Fashion and Style are two totally separate things.
As above button down collar only for casual wear, open neck.
I like them very much when worn under a jacket without a tie. Normal collars just get scrunched about and look messy.
I've been looking for a nice thick white cotton shirt recently and am coming to the conclusion that I'll have to retro-fit buttons because i can't find any button-downs in shops.
Ok, seems that its a casual thing, but why? Is it because the buttons mean you (back in the old days) could get away without ironing the collar?
Not even at weekends.
I used to look up to you flash
Al, I'm sorry. I shall don my smoking jacket and step outside for a cigar to think about what I have done.
Never under any circumstance should they have been worn since 1992.
Don't worry about Flash, fashion goes in 24 year cycles and he is 6 years ahead of the curve.
Beyond the pale.
See also: Short sleeved shirts, round neck collared shirts (unless you're a barrister), shirts with zips and shirts with epaulettes (unless you're serving military).
dg he's 18 years behind. Permanently.
Short sleeve shirts are fine.
djglover, you have no idea how right you are! I mean, look at how many hip young cats are wearing Sebago Docksides all of a sudden. The papers are full of reports that Barbour jackets and clothing from the likes of Orvis and Robjents are very much de rigeur among the fashionistas. I am back in fashion, apparently.
bravohotel9er, very true as well. I used to have a boss who wore a tie with his short sleeved shirts, with pockets. I was most amused when his boss upbraided him about it, saying, "Now, come on, we don't want anyone to look like a bus driver here".
I bet your butler laughed!!!

Funny that you showed that. I was just flicking through the John Norris catalogue on the bar counter, noticed the Barbour button downs, and thought I must check out this thread when I get back from the pub 🙂
had to wear short sleeved shirts in the last office I worked in as the girls liked the heating on full whack all the time

And court apprearances! 😀
Nice shirt and tie with a suit gets you a lesser sentence. I know this, as it has worked for me on numerous occasions.
Shirts with collars must only be worn with a tie - or a cravat. Tie less collared shirts are just wrong.
As for short sleeved shirts - get a grip.
Same as wearing sports jackets with jeans, same as wearing brown shoes in town, same as leaving your shirt untucked. Slovenly
Basically - if Clarkson would wear it it is wrong.
Button-down collars should be worn with beige "chinos" (whatever they are) by overweight Americans (yes, I know) on the days when they have run out of polo shirts.
