Can anyone please enlighten me on current bldg regs for loft insulation?
(I've just phoned my local council BR dept and been sopped with a really woolie answer)
FWIW..We're getting quotes for re-roofing an existing pitched roof, and adding a pitched roof onto an existing flat roofed extension. One of the builder/roofers reckons that latest bldg regs say that 50mm 'Kingspan' has to be installed between the rafters, aswell as rockwool between & over the joists. One of the other builders said that kingspan wasn't required.
If possible we'd prefer to install as much insulation as we can afford, but we don't want to go with a lower 'non-kingspan' quote, only to find that we've got to have it done when the bldg inspector visits.
(wasn't sure if different rules apply to existing roof and new section of pitched)
Page 27 is what you want.
I think Kingspan is a manufacturer of insulation so as long as you have the required amount of insulation it doesn't matter who makes it??? I could be wrong though.
As long as it meets the required insulation levels then you can use whatever product you want subject to approval.
Would the re-roof of an existing pitched roof be subject to the regs? I would have thought only the new pitched roof would.
Are you insulating from the loft or insulating the loft space. I can't remember the specific U-value (about 0.16 to ceiling and loft space combined or 0.2 if only the roof layer) but 200mm un-compacted quilt is what is usually installed between ceiling joists.
as aP says its U-values that matter. The 50mm that you builder refers to rigid board an sounds like the absolute minimum you require. Basically where insulation is concerned you should put in as much as affordable.
Kingspan website is very help full. Here's a starter http://www.insulation.kingspan.com/uk/pdf/k7.pdf
BTW. This is not the only product or solution
Yup Kingspan is a manufacturer
Thanks for the info., especially the link to the planningportal doc. I think the work we're having done corresponds with the first example in table 1 of the planning/b.regs document. i.e. replacement of tatty and thin existing insulation. The target U-value is 0.16 - and as we're not using the loft as living space it's suggesting 'rockwool' along and across joists. Interestingly, there's no mention of requirement for 'kingspan'/foam-board type insulation between rafters for non-living space lofts. Once again thanks for the info. Glad I checked.
