...in red tape.

Short version of the story....bought a house with a dodgy flue fitted to the woodburner. The builders had not used a twin wall in the loft, simply stuck a piece of flexi connector to the chimney.

2 X independent fitters confirmed unsafe and not to use so we had to have a new flue fitted.

Complained to the council who signed off the flue as complying with building Regs. Got a letter today from their insurance to say that the council gave the builder the forms to complete and send back. The council didn't even go in the loft to check as they didn't have ladders to access at the time. They  quoted a couple of case studies in law and said that they weren't liable and we would lose if we took them to court.

Our solicitor agrees with this so we are stuffed...wtf is the point of these beurocratic cockwombles...

Rant over...

My experience of BC it's mixed, and so depends on the individual officer and working with them, not fighting.
Also really knowing what the regs say, and how it can be applied, so that when you need to stand your ground you can do productively and confidently...

Building inspector signed off our wood burner without any knowledge of what he was doing. Luckily I did and it was all done correctly. He didn’t even look in loft, he had no understanding of the regs.

Matt - yeah I hear you. Never really had a problem in the past, always willing to work to achieve what they want/require to get things passed. We asked about alternatives, a raft, deeper footings and clay board both supported by a SE letter... response was sorry that's our policy with the proximity of the hedge and that was it. The only solution they would pass was their option
