I've not been to see a quack about my ailments but I quite often get sharp pains behind my big toe joint when I kneel down, something i can't avoid with work, the pain lasts for about 30 then dies down.
Is this likely to be a broken metatarsal and if I don't see a doctor will it eventually heal by itself.
Have you bashed it hard enough to break it? Or did the pain just start all by itself?
It almost certainly won't be broken if have no history of trauma. This sounds like the first metatarsal phalangeal joint (1MTPJ), which is often one of the first affected by osteoarthritis. Consult your GP.
Having had a fusion of my big toe joint about 5 years ago I feel your pain 😯
Fusion was a great success, though not without issues. Definitely worth getting a proper diagnosis, lots of small bones and nerves in feet...

That's weird, I always thought it was the larger, more proximal weight bearing joints that tended to get OA first- like the hips and knees
Can't remember any particular trauma but I could've been stamped on at football and forgotten about it.
Pain isn't in the joint, just behind.

He's probably thinking of Rheumatoid Arthirist.
I would say easiest thing for you would be to get it checked out. Could be a Morton's Neuroma (scary name for a relatively benign condition) and may well be sorted by something a simple as a shoe with a wider toe box. Hard to diagnose over the internet lol
