After 5 years of (semi) "serious" biking, weds night I came off and broke my collar bone. Where was I riding? Somewhere extreme? No........... along a tow path, and hit a pothole.

Dammit!

Smarts abit doesn't it?
All to common to have a stack on tame sections of trails, concentrations levels dip..

Healing vibes from me.

cheers guys. what troubles me, is how do the two sections of broken bone know how to align themselves to bond back together? probably best not to think about it...

I still can't believe it happened.... sob...

Know how you feel mate, im just about recovered from mine (2 months)! "Where did you do it?" i hear you ask. No not while i was downhilling in Morzine, oh no it was the week after riding a local trail at about two miles an hour, went over the bars and landed on a hidden rock!!

I should have been goin faster! Speed is your friend!

Broke mine in 1998, I still think it's my worst injury yet...it's amazing how many body movements involve flexing your collar bone!

Make sure you get your shoulder joint moving ASAP, that took me more physio time to sort than the collar bone, I relied on my sling for far too long.

And a more recent break (wrist and dislocated hand) had taught me to treat codiene with a huge amount of respect...it worked but I wish I'd stopped taking it sooner.

Get well soon!

They don't! The bone will just heal with the two ends wherever they currently are.

The bones will be fairly well in line if the doctors have left them alone, you'll probably have a lump though.
And try not to sneeze, the feeling of the 2 ends rubbing against each other before they bonded is horrible!

Speed wasn't my friend in this case, as hit the deck about 14-15 mph, but my lid certainly WAS my friend otherwise it would have been a far worse story as the side of my head took a big wack.

So remember kids - wear your crash helmet!!

Freeman, same here, with that and the prominent end of collarbone freakoid feature from torn ACJ,i look a right mess.

The blood vessels from the broken ends cleverly find each other and begin to make up bone tissue, in the form of white gloop, it hardens into a blob of bone, there tend not to realign themselves if they've become out of line.

Mine overlapped by half an inch, impressive stuff how the body repairs.

Oh yeah and dont try to pick up a pint of water a couple of days after you've done it as you'll snap the barely started to heal bone again! As i did! Not a pleasant sound...... eeeurgghh

Yes, echo what was said above about moving your shoulder joint, it can be done without moving your collar bone, try it because otherwise it will hurt for ages. I was off the bike for six weeks, straight back to commuting the day the six weeks was up. Offroad felt a bit strange for a while. There was a lump but it's gone down a lot now. You'll be fine, promise.

I did mine 3 weeks ago today. On the road too, gutted. Stopped needing painkillers after about 3-4 days so don't worry about that but mobility does suffer. Mine's fixed itself while still poking out an inch or more, looks like someone's inside me poking a finger through my skin. I'm gonna see if the NHS will rebreak it and make it set properly, need it to be perfect for my marines application 🙁

You'll end up very very thankful for the internet lol, don't know what I'd have done without it, hate being immobile. Good luck with it, chin up it'll get better!
