MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
OpenReach have been working on the phone lines on my estate (repairs) and I have now noticed that my speed has dropped off! It wasn't great to start with ~ 3 Meg which Virgin (my supplier) have said is so bad that they are only charging me half price for! I'm now getting just over 1 Meg according to the speed test websites but I have noticed that it says I am connected to a London exchange and that all my google searches think I'm in central London too now. I'm a mile away from Cardiff City centre!! It used to connect to either a Newport or Bristol exchange before so I'm guessing the wiring has been altered to my detriment.
Apart from the slow speeds, I'm also noticing a few sites are loading the mobile website for me on my laptop, which is very annoying!! Also takes a few tries to load some websites as it keeps timing out! Any ideas as to how this can be sorted out? Virgin are saying nothing as they haven't been told of anything that has changed infrastructure-wise so am at a loose end!
Re mobile site loading, try a different web browser - a number of newer websites made with wordpress etc do not display properly on older versions on internet explorer.
If you haven't already upgrade to IE9 or google chrome etc.
May help, I know it did on my work computer as I was having the same issue with our own company website and I was running IE8 - did the above and now displays fine.
Ask neighbours what speed they are getting, just to check is not your house...
I fettled our BT home master socket- it had four iffy extensions on. We got a 2mb jump in performance...
Plug router into test socket and report back.
The location reported by Speedtest is irrelevant.

Is it actually the mobile site, or is it just badly rendered?

This.
Definitely the mobile sites loading, the m in the address bar confirms it. Tried the test plug and it made no difference, using a different browser didn't either.
All my neighbours have the same problem so points at something on the wiring side.
Why would all the websites think I'm in London though? It's over 100 miles away! Even Google Earth shows me as just south of the river when I use the 'find me' function. still having to try and load pages multiple times before it doesn't time out.
Get a much faster speed on my phone!

As I understand it, these websites use a database of where IP addresses are located. However ISPs can reorganise these and the database quickly becomes erroneous.
My Dad recently spent a few months in Manchester, according to the internet 🙂
You will still be connected to the same exchange by the way. That wiring is more or less fixed.
