I have run a shop for around 6yrs, we used to sell sweets out of the jar, quite often the elderly customers would ask for a quarter pound of mint imperials etc.... I just switch the scales to imperial and gave them the amount they wanted - never realised it was 'illegal'. We all know the whole thing is pointless, a political pr stunt to distract.
We stopped selling sweets by weight a couple of years ago, it was uneconomical. All my fruit and veg is quite happily metric 😁
Nothing to do with us Europeans.
From the link:
The discrepancy between calculated and measured position, resulting in the discrepancy between desired and actual orbit insertion altitude, had been noticed earlier by at least two navigators, whose concerns were dismissed because they "did not follow the rules about filling out [the] form to document their concerns". A meeting of trajectory software engineers, trajectory software operators (navigators), propulsion engineers, and managers was convened to consider the possibility of executing Trajectory Correction Maneuver-5, which was in the schedule. Attendees of the meeting recall an agreement to conduct TCM-5, but it was ultimately not done.[
Is there an engineer anywhere who doesn't find themselves in this exact scenario at least once a month?
Blooming ‘eck – so the americans just confused themselves?
Scientists all over the world use metric, but engineers in the US use imperial. I'd read somewhere that the problem was caused by an mistake such as an inaccurate conversion not a lack of understanding as such.
I can still get Cadburys chocolate in my nearest Carrefour 🙂
Similar issue occurred when A90 was built at Aldermaston. The glove boxes and extraction systems from them didn't fit together properly as both systems were in use.

Yep, I've worked with folk like these...
The BBC are doing a great job talking about gas prices without any mention of Brexit.
imperial units makes the old people happy, and the stupid people patriotic.
that's all that matters.

I am all for a bit of Brexit bashing, but isn't this a global issue and not influenced by Brexit?

Not so much…
And the reasons…

The BBC doing a great job this morning of not mentioning this. Britain has to pay more than the rest of Europe because we haven’t replaced the deal that protected us from market rates in this kind of situation.

Cos they turned the Bristol factory into a housing estate and set up shop in Poland 🙁
Best thing of cycling to work on the Bath 2 Bristol cycle track was the glorious smell of that place wafting over.
Cadburys is now inedible since they were sold and changed the recipe - horrible greasy stuff. Yuck
Originally it was one of the kings of englands thumb
Handy if you are that king. Less so for anyone else.
Reminds me of the USAF project to come up with the perfect cockpit after having a bunch of accidents related to ergonomic issues. They went and measured a bunch of pilots and came up with the perfect average person size. However one of their researchers went back through all those pilots to see how many were close to that perfect size and found zero. Even relaxing the rules bit by bit didnt work until they had thrown away most of the measurements.
That was when they started coming up with adjustable cockpits instead.
Another dose of Brexit reality from Newsnight last night

A USA trade deal can deliver the UK very little. Much of what we might be able to "export" more of to them faces legislation and checks at the state level, not just the federal level. And... it's a long way away (yes, that still REALLY matters).
Brexit impact was predicted:

Project fear though, obviously:

Gas storage, why should we have kept that:

My belief has always been that a US/UK trade deal will be negative for the UK as we've a surplus of trade with the US and no US President would agree to a deal where they weren't the 'winner'.
Not having a deal is really a win economically for the UK and a win politically for anyone anti-Brexit/Tory/Johnson/etc.
At last a brexit benefit! Fireworks Night Cancelled?
Probably because they don't want people taking a leaf out of Fawkes' book and piling them up under the Houses of Parliament.
… it’s a long way away (yes, that still REALLY matters).
Yep the convience of being able to order an extra box of widgets for tommorrow shipped from France or Germany was surprisingly useful.
I picked a new caravan up from Germany with my m8,who was amazed at how quick and easy it was to get over there and bring stuff back. He then used to threaten his German suppliers with "I'll pop over and pick it up" when they were being slow in dispatching.
Now they just don't want the business.
Been a busy one today
Just checking to see how brexit is going
Oh I see petrol rationing 😳
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58645712
They actually mentioned Brexit in there… avoided it in every Radio4 news or current affairs piece on both petrol shortages (we took back control and told the drivers to eff off) and gas supply (IEM just isn’t British enough) stories today.
The BBC is actually getting to the Fawlty Towers ‘don’t mention the war’ point when it comes to the ‘B’ word
Fireworks night cancelled ?
Great - except that upturned cars burn goooooood.
deleted - wrong thread
Be interesting to see if they can carry on gaslighting us when we have no gas, and no lighting.
Brexit may not be the sole, or root cause of many of these problems, but it contributes enough to them to make them bite. Is there anything that has been made easier and cheaper as a result of Brexit?
There was some prime gaslighting going on on Radio 4 this morning.
Grant Shapps made the statement that Brexit wasn't the problem, but instead it was 'providing the solution'
This statement went completely unchallenged

Well, at least he won't get fired from his ministerial position.

Get out of my head!

Admitting the Blessed Brexit is anything other than marvellous is the only thing you can get fired for nowadays.
Putting all the other stuff to one side, they are running out of candidates stupid or cynical enough to take a cabinet job now.
What a crock of shit.
Normal 3D from the governemnt
1. Deny there's a problem
2, Distraction. it isn't Brexit it's COVID
3. Delay Don't do anything until it's too late.
SOP for these shysters
Grant Shapps gets to deliver his “Brexit is the final solution” nonsense on @BBCr4today as his final line, unchallenged. Job done. Thank you very much BBC.
No surprise there.
Here, have a unicorn with a rainbow coming out its arse.
the haulage industry might beg to differ with the Shapps appraisal

As the issue isn't so much lack of drivers but utilisation of drivers, ie cabotage, how much of a fix is visas anyway.
Also the issue of where these drivers are coming from, Poland, Afghanistan, etc. How equivalent are licences??
The drivers won’t be coming on zero rights visas. They’ve got the message. We’ve been shouting it at them for 5 years now.
As the issue isn’t so much lack of drivers but utilisation of drivers, ie cabotage, how much of a fix is visas anyway.
Are you sure about that? I keep seeing 100 000+ drivers short ( seems a huge number to me)
25 000 EU nationals who driove HGVs left
EU drivers do not want to cross the channel any more
