So much to agree with in recent posts... I don't know where to begin.

It could backfire on the Government though. Electorate could say 'you told us it'd be easy, everything would be great' when it's not.

Piece of piss.

Blame the foreigners, splutter and slobber something about 'Dunkirk Spirit', 'Standing Alone' and mention Churchill a couple of times and you're home and dry.

All of the above are, basically, why this shit is happening in the first place. Enough of the population were daft enough to swallow it whole. Now 'pride' takes effect and no way can enough of the misled people admit they got done like a kipper.

Indeed “the EU are punishing us” … that’s what we’ll get once we get through the “it’s teething problems” stage.

UK still in SM for EU exporters but not for UK exporters .

That negociating team of yours did a brilliant job .

Indeed.

So we’re talking back full control of our borders in 2022 now, rather than this year. Meanwhile, our businesses & people are being hit hard when they try to export. One way Brexit. Well done. Slow handclap. And to think the EU offered an extension on their side; we turned it down.

That will work less and less as reality bites.

It's easy to look down on Brexiters, but I don't think they are all knuckle dragging arseholes. A lot of people really had no idea what the point of the EU was and they were told there wouldn't be any downsides, so they went with that.

If you were told we were paying tons of money into a corrupt system that offered us no benefit and actually caused an administrative burden wouldn't you want to vote out of it? Of course there were people telling you otherwise, but how do you know who's right? Go with your gut, as we're often told to do?

Whilst the right wing bigots will never change their mind, I suspect a lot of people in the middle will. And there plenty of evidence that has already happened.

****ing about with something you have little-to-no clue about?

Life has shown me this is very much done by

Not had a peek at this thread for a week or so. All I've got to say is:

I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK.

You know, the one I've spent my entire adult life living in, everything I know about being British comes from my time living in the place. I don't recognise this new country we are now living in as Britain at all.

That BBC link that kelvin put up has something strange going o in the comments section. Normally it's full of gammoney Leavers claiming it's all the EU's fault, they accept the short-term pain etc but that one is full of people seeing it for what it is: a giant cock-up.

I am genuinely amazed, maybe the public are finally seeing it for what it is.

* EDIT: the swear filter doesn't just **** things out, it offers up alternatives!! Cluster (swear word) changes to 'A bit of a mess'. At least it doesn't change the meaning of the sentence.

Given that the government is riding high in the polls you need to provide some evidence of people changing their minds, Molgrips. I see more evidence of two entrenched camps. Remain might win today but who knows, the polling is much the same as 2015-16:

I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK.

I think you’ll have a long wait. Unfortunately Brexit will embed the new normal for a generation. Us against the world. Migration for the rich. You’re like us, or against us.

The great unwashed dont give a * as long as beer and entertainment is maintained at current levels.

Been here before probably on this thread, the stuff we discuss on here simply doesn't exist to them, its not that they are ignoring it - they simply accept their world for what it is.

I am a fairly rough arsed Northerner, but i have to make sure in conversation with my extended family i dont use words or refer to things they dont understand.

The level of education both formal and informal is so low i dont know how to describe it - some of them are as close to a "Zombie" as you can get outside of the Movies.

I *ing despair, i am now at a point where i have given up - i have nephews that make the Young Offenders characters look well dressed and articulate and most of them have never met their Father. Some of them started looking for jobs to get Furloughed i shit you not. One asked me if i could give a job and put him on furlough.

I dont know if we really understand what we are dealing with? Or the magnitude of the challenges, - i dont think this is fixable, between the gammons and this lot god knows how.

It's occure to me that if I take Eurostar with a Brompton in one hand and a couple of Brompton bags in the other I'm likely to get taxed on the bike in London and taxed again on return to France. Any thoughts on this, Covid has put the plan on hold but I'm still hoping to do the trip in September.

Should be fine. It’ll be obviously not “new”, yes?

Yes, but how much difference does that make? Bringing a second-hand guitar back from the US will earn you a tax bill. It doesn't mater whether things are new or second hand. I'd feel confident getting off the boat in Portsmouth as it's clearly transport but a bike in a bag is luggage.

@Edukator Take anything from ugov with a large (extra large) pinch of salt, they are a Tory fronted organisation. About as trustworthy as a black mamba snake.

He really doesn't. We've discussed this before. YouGov are a professional polling and research company. If they get a reputation for rigging their results then they are out of business. Their results are no less reliable than any other pollsters.

@edukator, all you need to know about the tories polling well is vaccination. Brexit isn’t an issue, it isn’t obvious. The vaccine rollout appears to be going well and the polls reflect this.

Having taken my bike to the US many times, they don't do this. You only have to declare goods that you are going to leave in the country, OR if they are very high value. Otherwise they'd have to strip you and log your watch, your jewellery etc every time you travelled. They did however stop my Mother in Law as she tried to smuggle in a bike for us at our request, and made her pay duty on it (quite rightly). They gave her a voucher and said she claim it back on her return. I guess I fit the profile and she didn't. Plus when I travel my bike is used and I also have a helmet and a bag full of clearly well used cycling gear and paraphernalia so it is pretty clear I'm going to be riding it.

But you need to remember its yougov because they are always more favourable to the tories and worse for the SNP than other pollsters. Deliberate bias or simply different weightings? Its irrelevant why but the apparent bias is relevant.

so comparing one You Gov poll to another is fine - comparing it to another pollsters results and extrapolating trends from that is not going to work

I dont know if we really understand what we are dealing with?

Your comments about your family are valuable (to the likes of us) and insightful, however what we don't know is what proportion of the UK or even the Brexit vote shares their viewpoint. Of course the angry middle classes on here will insist they all are.

Good point about the helmet, shoes, clothes, tools etc. Molgrips. I'll have a few photos on the phone taken in obvious places. Thanks. Get on the train in cycling kit and all should go fine.

Look at the food sector part of that (63% drop). UK food production is screwed. Especially with our one-way Brexit for that sector... giving back control to other countries...

I'm interested to understand if/when the effects of that 40% will felt....

And also how much of it can be blamed on EU / dirty forriners in general / covid / teething problems / anything other than the sacred cow that is Brexshit.

Brompton smuggler,I suppose as long as you had some cycling accoutrements you’d be fine as you can’t just ram a bike on a Eurostar, I think you had to use a box and tbh the whole purpose of a Brompton is to be used as hand luggage so it wouldn’t be an unexpected surprise.

Brand new Brompton in a sealed box possibly a different scenario.
So open the box and ride it around the block and lose the box then your in the wheelbarrow business 🙂

They won't stop you if you are bringing in an obviously used bike and are obviously using it. Don't worry about it.

Just don't wear a stripy top, beret and a necklace of onions, though, otherwise you might end up in an internment camp.

Worth a listen.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000sz9b

The Bottom Line
Since Brexit, many firms have had to set up a subsidiary operation in the EU to continue trading. What are the rules, pitfalls and costs? Evan Davis hears from three businesses.

^^^^

Just listened to that.

It just highlights what a ridiculous folly Brexit is. No good is going to come of it whatsoever.

You've got two out of the three companies involved who would clearly rather be 100% UK based basically having to create jobs in the EU (and not the UK) to be able to connect with their customers.

If there is any word better than 'stupid' to describe a country that votes to regress in terms of ease of international trade whilst the rest of the world goes in the opposite direction, I can't think of one.

Stupid.

* EDIT: the swear filter doesn’t just * things out, it offers up alternatives!! Cluster (swear word) changes to ‘A bit of a mess’. At least it doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence.

I appreciate this was a couple of days ago but,

The swear filter is simply word replacement, If This Then That. So the f-word gets replaced with four asterisks because * is literally the replacement word entered for that particular swear. Your cluster-etc is just the same. There's quite a few humorous 'Easter Egg' responses in there, the common abbreviation for "too long, didn't read" is another which leaps to mind but there's several others.

Oh, I can think of many. Most of which would be problematic as per the first half of this post.

I'm going to try one on the strength of this:

There’s quite a few humorous ‘Easter Egg’ responses in there, the common abbreviation for “too long, didn’t read” is another which leaps to mind but there’s several others.

as I sense a new game of 'find the Easter Egg' in the swear filter.

bit of a mess.

EDIT: that's 2 that default to that!

Stuart over at Bearbones has a few "mots amusants" in the swear filter: sh1t becomes "sub standard" and so on. As Cougar says, it's just a very basic search and replace mechanism.

Anyway back to synonyms of stupid ...

***** !!!! @$^&!

Like putting sanctions on your own exporters 🙂

Wait till you see Schrödinger's U.S FTA.

My current favourite tho is that great national hero Francoise trying to get the government to renege on paying the Brexit Divorce.

In the same vain looks like the fish quotas are less(in real terms) as the quotas can’t be traded with the e.u.members as they could previously.

(There’s an interesting eco/safety slant as they would swap for convenience to fish locally)

Brexits good but it’s the deal cry’th the paper.

Oops.

(So the British fish are happy apart from the kippers)

Brexit is what is has always been, a ranty little tantrum by a childish nation fuelled by a childish obsession with former glories.

Standing next to the 'other side' and holding a gun to our own head and threatening them with a moderately expensive dry cleaning bill.

The 'other side' are actually just weighing up whether or not to take the opportunity to buy a new suit altogether whilst 'we' rant and rave.
