I thought the pint was originally a French unit of measurement

Comes from a French word, don't tell the daily express!

We'd have to go with this I think:

Scottish pint or joug (obsolete)-2 pints and 19.69 imp fl oz

Is there actually anyone of working age who will have worked with imperial measurements?

Or are we, once again, making policy to placate racist pensioners in Eastbourne?

Yes, we all work with them every day. They never went away. The UK government started moving us towards a hybrid system where metric is always available alongside the quant old units, because the 1960s were about progress. It had nothing to do with later joining the EU. And glasses that held a pint if brimmed (so no head and having to drink from the glass before you could carry it) were done away with for good reason. Pint to line glasses never went away, and the EU never said we couldn’t use the crown symbol on them. This is all utter bullshit.

Officially we work in metric, and any old plans need to be converted to metric, but most of us in our 50s think in a weird hybrid in our head

Rees-Mogg will be in his element, he'll be absolutely loving this. Next step will be sending kids out to the workhouses which he'll be fully on board with too.

As others say, it never went away, the reality is that the EU directive was never really adhered to by the UK, so they amended it, and that's why we kept miles for road markings, pints for milk, beer, etc and so on.

It never really affected the UK using both systems, the EU, and UK didn't care if Joe Bloggs wanted to sell his fruit and veg by the pound or kilogram, it does affect those selling to places like the EU, if they do not put metric units on their goods, but again, that's not going to cause old Sue to have a heart attack, as she's none the wiser.

As for this, it's Boris being Boris, he has again just blurted something out as if it's of merit, it has no merit, those regulations that require following due to metrication will still need to be followed, otherwise UK businesses will lose business, if anyone wants to use imperial in the UK, well it never went away, it is just an antiquated system that has been replaced by a more efficient, and useful scale.

I did enjoy reading some of the comments on articles though, it is pretty much as you'd expect, 80 year old gammons going on about the good old days.

Imagine toe costs of goods going up even more as the EU factories need to find the cost to change all the packing just for Little Britain - he hasn’t thought this through has he.

I work for an American organisation. I carry two sets of allen keys, two sets of spanners, and two sets of feeler gauges. We process materials measured in microns. Bloody pain in the arse.

We calibrate equipment with a mix of Imperial and metric weights. There's no reason not to use either though the manufacturing and therefore work instructions originate from the US.

Both sets of weights are easily available in the UK in traceable form and the local authority calibrate these for us annually. It's not an issue.

Its obviously more dog whistle shit from the shower of ****s but I suppose it makes it easier to figure out who you should be giving your money too.

He has though hasn't he. All part of the "punishment" for the country voting the wrong way in the referendum.......

Yes, every time you drive past a road sign... distance to places in miles, distance to give way in yards, countdown marker stripes to a motorway junction 300 yards, 200 yards, 100 yards (marker posts and emergency phones are set at multiples of 100m intervals-work that one out!)
Possibly the most common BB thread is 1.37 inches x 24 threads per inch, but 68mm, or 73mm or 83mm or 100mm wide 🙂

Standard threads, nuts, bolts… what’s the point of that? A different thread for every application on every fixing, please. And keep them completely proprietary if possible. Progress is for the global liberal elites, like Joseph Whitworth, we want none of that.

great to be able order a pint again

I’ve never been in a pub in the UK that asked me to order half a litre.

Yeah weird innit and the road signs not being in KM.

It’s got a very small market for this,I’m awaiting the next announcement that your going back to the pre-decimal currency system and bringing back hanging 🙂

Pipe fitters are one example.

The manuals for some of the American equipment we install is in imperial and metric, it's been known to be wrong, which is a problem as it's fairly critical. So you either convert it yourself to check or do it in imperial.

But yeah, American engineers I've met prefer working in metric too.

Do you use both imperial and metric adjustable spanners? That’d be a pain having to carry both.

I work in Aerospace and all dimensions are in mm, but hole diameters and fastener sizes are imperial! Natural I think in a hybrid at 34, although during our apprenticeship we were taught imperial measures for this reason.

Ironic that you're asking this on a cycling forum given the cycle industry's obsession with mixing imperial and metric!

Day to day, I'm not sure many people care. You go to a Post Office and weigh a letter and just buy the correct amount of stamps, it doesn't matter that it's 57g or 2oz.
You fill up with fuel and just put £20 in, doesn't matter that it's 2.5 gallons or 11.4 litres (at £1.75/l).
Food is just a tin or a jar or a pre-pack. I need a tin of beans - here's a tin of beans.

It's all a bit crazy really.

The reality we live in is a bit of both.

Sometimes a bit of conversion is nesesary, luckily I have a tape measure with both measurements on it!

Thank god for Stanley!

And it's proper mixing.....inches expressed with a decimal point! Any other industry do that?

You see I only ever buy tape measures that are metric only because frankly dual sided tapes are PITA when the side you want to measure in mm always seems to be on the inch side. Thankfully there are plenty of metric only tapes out there these days.

I have some imperial micrometers. Gawd knows how anyone used the seriously.

But I do like imperial. there is poetry in the units and they are at a better human scale than metric.

I mean - a hectare - 100m x 100m. dull. An acre is a chain by a furlong. Much more poetic

Hate to disagree with you uncle Jezza, but you can keep your poetry. As someone who uses measurements constantly all day, every day, Imperial units of measurement make absolutely no sense whatsoever and are frankly the product of a deranged mind

No wonder Boris wants them back

an acre is defined as the amount of land ploughable by one man and an ox in one day. In other words 43,560 square feet. It can be any shape.

In future all journeys shall be measured against the time taken to travel by pony and trap and include stoppages for spent beasts and highwaymen.

come on - what makes more sense than 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard 9 1/2 feet ( IIRC) is a rod, pole or perch ( with again IIRC regional variations) 22 yards in a chain, 10 chains is a furlong and a mile - the crowning glory - 8 furlongs or 1760 yards or 5280 ft

Then you have the wonder of the old inch to a mile maps 1: 63360

And of course troy weight and avoirdupois weight

then nautical =- a fathom is six feet and nautical miles something I have forgotton that is bigger than a statue mile

All much nicer numbers and much less boring. don't throw away the poetry! You have the soul of a philistine

Bet you pump up your tyres to PSI not bar 🙂

Here in Spain, which was still in the EU last time I looked, the plumbers use 3/4 " pipe and fittings all the time.
