Can anyone recommend some software suitable for laying out a thick magazine/book. Mac OSX preferably.

It's been a while since I've done this and last time used Indesign..but hopefully there is something better now!

You have one other option, which has been for years the de facto industry standard, and that's Quark Xpress. It was around long before Adobe even thought of Indesign. Trouble is, it's chuffing expensive, well over £1000/copy, IIRC, and like CS these days, all tied up with online registration to avoid people copying or using on more than one computer.
If you've got Indesign and know it, stick with it, pretty much any repro house will take your files, or you just send them high res pdf's. Our studio uses both, all the time.

I went from Quark to InDesign because of cost and never looked back - it was far better (7 years ago) but not tried Quark since, although it seems the majority use InDesign now so I assume it is still superior.

But it doesn't send an alien on to zap stuff when you cntr/alt/apple/delete like Quark does 🙂

I'm a magazine art director. Started in quark too but now all the big mag publishers are on InDesign.

It was a cost thing if I recall and quark were resting on their laurels an adobe left them behind.

Quark probably is just as good. Bit late now!

EDIT: I miss the alien too!!

It was around long before Adobe even thought of Indesign.

But InDesign was born out of Aldus PageMaker which was around before Quark!

And Quark has (had?) much better keyboard typesetting shortcuts, but InDesign still superior - masks, layers, multiplying, drop shadows etc when Quark had none of it ( although I am sure it does now).

What's that all about, I got a lovely copy of Solidworks and I'll be blown if I can get it to work on my PC!!

If they all go that way I can honestly see it effecting the industry as when are the students etc going to learn the zillions of programs now required, to even gain a junior role.

Plenty of patches available to avoid the registration apparently

Magazine art director here too. It has to be indesign. I switched over from Quark years ago and never looked back. I've just started a job for a client where I'm using Quark 8. Too little, too late I'm afraid. Its still rubbish

It always amazed me that quark was 'industry standard' as it never failed to disappoint me.
