[#2115460]

The wife just showed me this.

Her friend has a new kid starting in her class next term. Her name is L_a. How would you pronounce it?

My first response was "is she from Liverpool?"

I shall reveal the answer later tonight. I guarantee nobody will get it, unless you actually know the person.

"Ella" would be my guess. Although I'd have called her parents various uncomplimentary things first for being stupid enough to give the poor girl a name spelt like that in the first place...

I spoke to a Michael Hunt today. Bet he wishes he was called L_a.

L_a?

Her name actually has an underscore in it? That's just her first name?

Its obviously pronounced un-duh-skor. Silent l, silent a.

I'm not too sure of the actual rules of this game.

Are you saying her name starts with an l then has any number of letters and ends in an a, or is there just one leter, e.g. lia?

Perhaps the underscore is like the blank letters in scrabble

Ladasha? Really?

How is "_" equivalent to adash. Especially as its not a dash is it, its an underscore. A dash is a slightly longer hyphen, "-".

I don't think the kind of people who would call their child that payed much attention during English.
I thought it was a wind up!

Simon and skidartist, are you chavs?

If I had my way it would be you Molgrips - Bigelle-smallay - superb

Who knows though L_a / Ladasha might catch on, some names just seem to appear spontaneously and become commonplace in no time at all 'Darren' just appeared in the middle of the 20th Centry. There were no Darrens, then suddenly there were lots and nobody really knows why.

Name your kids after the numberplate on your car, keep them numberplate on retention then gift it to them on their 18th Birthday, boom, instant cherished number.

No, more like La-a, but not quite.

What's the difference between a dash and a hyphen anyway?

A Dash has a compartment for stringbacked gloves and a Hyphen is a mythical beast, made of scrag ends of other animals held together with No More Nails

A dash is used instead of "to". eg: 8-10 years old, 90-100 pringles per can, etc. etc.

A hyphen is used so connect words (hyphenated).

_ is an underscore.

I'm thinking of calling my impending child Sebastian. Will he be treated as an outcast for being the only kid at school with a normal name?
