We will be in touch
right just had the SO text me to tell me her brakes needed doing which after 60.000 miles is fair enough, she had noticed a drop off in performance, we have had no sensor lights come on warning of low pads etc, kwik fit have charged £500 for new discs all round and new front pads...now call me tight but that seems a bit expensive, and i also find it hard to believe that all the discs are worn, she says they showed her with calipers the depth etc, so have asked her to bring the discs home so i can measure them..
that is BMW for you...
if you are not sure re price, phone up a parts factor and get price for parts then double to include for labour.
also phone BMW parts and ask them for cost of BMW parts only and also cost for BMW dealer to do same work.
example from BMW for E46 3 series pads and disc:
http://tinyurl.com/ye3q58z £229 - 1 series bound to be more
You could buy a car with 12 months tax and mot for that.
That does seem steep.
£88.27 here for the fronts.
Double it (at the most) for the rears and add 20(ish) quids worth of pads.
sounds 'bout right after 60k
You can't always rely on the sensors. You might have a broken sensor relay. Beemer garage sparky can confirm/relieve you of mega-bucks.
thought it would be right,i can find the parts cheaply online for about £260 but obv that doesn't include fitting, i know bmw attract premium rates but she has always had them and her choice..thank god i dont own a car..............
if you run the pads too far it will screw the discs...
And its still a current model, so bits are often expensive.
I have just had new front discs and pads, and rear pads on my 1 series. For the front pads and discs the total was £309 plus VAT, for the rear pads only it was £131 plus VAT, that includes labour. So pretty much what you have been charged. That was at my local BMW garage, so I would have thought Kwik fit would be loads less.
Luckily for me it was paid for by the lease company. They were changed after 80,000 miles, they had tried to change them at the previous service, but the lease company wouldn't let them as they weren't worn enough... I think I still had about 5,000 miles until the onboard computer thought they should be changed.
Prices from the BMW invoice:
Front Pads £73.11 + Vat
Front Discs £113.20 + Vat
Rear Pads £57.35 + Vat
They also charged £17 front and back for a new sensor. The rest was all labour charges.
Not too bad.
My midget cost me £300, but that was DIY and includes most of the tooling. Recon it would cost about the same to pay an hourly rate as it did to buy tools.
Bear in mind some designs have the disks mounted behind th ehub so may well have had new bearings etc? Or at least had to fiddle with the old ones which is a PITA.
yes i would have thought kwik fit would have been cheaper, they say its the discs that are the expensive item on the beemer and not the pads, its her money so it doesnt matter and safety comes first...still dont trust garages when it comes to women lol
Front pads and discs for my wifes' Freelander at a Land Rover dealer was £300, I'm afraid £500 is going to be on the money.
My older cars;
Omega 3.0i = front discs, pads and fitting = £125
405Mi16 = front discs, pads and fitting = £75 and rear pads £19
I'd put money on it that quickfit didnt use genuine bmw parts, so beware they may warp judder fairly quickly. they have a habit of using cheapest parts possible and selling high as possible! The minimum thickness specs always seem a bit concervative aswell generally - normally plenty of disc left but below manufacturers tolerance's. I dont know if its still the same there but the 'fitters' ( i wont call them technicians as many aren't!) are on bonus schemes where they are encouraged to sell certain quantitys of items, so earn more. not good practice for a business that rely's on a certain level of trust from the customer. They didn't fit new rear pads though?
My 330 is booked in at the end of the month, BMW specialist but not a main dealer, £620 for discs & pads all-round, bargain. At least they are genuine parts I guess and that does include the sensor which they won't charge for if not needed (although something tells me it will be needed...).
I think you've been royally ripped off personally. Was it at a MOT? You should always phone round for quotes.
I had an advisory at a Kwik fit MOT 2yrs ago. I took the car to my preferred garage to have the work done 6months later.
You would be looking at 2-3hrs labour to do all 4 disks and pads on a car, through my friendly garrage i got mine all done with a full service for £550 my 53 plate polo which had only done 50K miles. i saw the disks and all of them were totally shagged. You can try shoppping roungd for the parts yourself, brakes4u are pretty competative on price and if you know a good mechanic they normally fits parts that you supply.
I would think you could possibly knock £50 - 100 off that price but i don't know anything about the sensors, this is where the extra cost could be comming in as they may need to be reset etc and most places have a standard diagnostic fee.
Good luck
Cheers
Rusty
cars do cost more than bikes..
Spot on pricewise, mine goes in on Monday for the same treatment, deep joy.
I've just had the front disks and pads done on my 320D and it was £197 inc. labour. That was at an independent specialist with BMW parts.
Sounds expensive but maybe this is the way of things now.
This may make you feel better!
Just put my car in for service and now staring at the best part of £2000 worth of costs on top of the service cost and its only done 50,000 miles and it's not 4 years old yet.
Service £500
New Discs and pads all round £900
Wheel alignment £190
New rear suspension £900
😐
Tiger6791- what car is it? Did have a rear end smash previously? 😯
didnt you speak to the manufacturer for a contribution due to the age of the car?
My bosses 5yr old Mini convertible needed a new roof motor at £1,300 fitted. Mini contributed £1,100 after I contacted head office.
Its worth a bloody try.
Wheel alignment £190
I'm guessing its Mercedes who shafted you.
Kwik-Fit are complete and utter cowboys.
as above.
dropped my car in when exhaust fell off at last moment as everything was shut. they went round and found 1 tyre that 'definately' needed changing.
then 2 advisories (all on the phone)
i popped down (as i work nearby) and asked to see them... and was told there had been a mistake and it was a different car they were talking about.
my arse. bet if i hadnt walked down they woulda swapped all 3 tyres off no bother.
hora
what car is it? Discovery 3
Did have a rear end smash previously? Nope, owned from new
didnt you speak to the manufacturer for a contribution due to the age of the car? Yes, they are looking into it but it's ouside Land Rovers 44 month policy???
Wheel alignment £190 Gonna try get this done somewhere else cheaper than the main dealer I think
I'm guessing its Mercedes who shafted you. Nope good old British Leyland build quality 🙂
I'd fight it. Seriously. Post it up on www.pistonheads.com/gassing.
I bet there are other Disco owners etc on there or people with experiences in taking a fight to manufacturers.
Why does it the rear suspension doing? £900 for discs and pads alround?
I wonder if its just this dealership who charges these prices.
Ring around a few dealers, ask for the service dept and ask them how much it would be for the pads/discs. £900 is excessive.
It sounds (to me) as though its the end of warranty 'goodbye/kiss off' sting. Out of warranty- and they know soon you may not bother with main dealer servicing as warranty expired so sting you before you leave for good...
you been doing some badass off roading to go through a set of rear shocks?
main stealers can be pretty expensive. id consider just going elsewhere mate. stupid amount of cash...
Plus (possibly a generalisation) but at the end of the warranty period owners sometimes decide its time for a change/new car. Hit them with a big bill and they settle/payup thinking 'ah I just want to get out of this car/see the back of it after this big bill'?
Thats a guess BTW.
you been doing some badass off roading to go through a set of rear shocks?
It does get used, but not bad ass off roading. It's not the shocks it's the air suspension that has a fault they can't find so the only option is to replace the system. Joy 😐
could see where i was going eh? 😉
sounds like a typical 'we dont know what it is - so we'll just swap out everything' modern/electrical/bollocks sensor thing to me.
modern cars eh? they'll never catch on.
If I'm reading the OP correctly - They put new discs all round but re-used the rear pads? That is insane. The old pads will score your lovely new discs straight away.
I would never let kwik fit do anything to my car, except fitting tyres.
new discs and pads all round on a series 2 5 cylinder audi coupe was 400 quid at a dealer 8 years ago. the price isn't a million miles out IMO.
she probably will never have to pay for them again - don't they come with a 'for as long as you keep the car' warranty from kwik fit?
I would never let kwik fit do anything to my car, except fitting tyres.
My usual tyre indie is closed on a Sunday so I used Kwikfit to balance my tyres. I then had them rebalanced correctly the next day.
The job they did was shoddy. They also used the words 'counter balanced' wrongly. I always use Kwik fit for my MOT as they can only stitch me up on exhaust/pads/disc/tyres- all items that I could turn round easily and say 'wrong I checked them myself before I brought in'.
I just paid £148 (including VAT) for discs and pads fitted on my Mondeo Estate. Nice local garage.
As an ex fitter I CANNOT believe that people go anywhere near the likes of kwik fit & then complain about the charges! What do you expect? I wouldn't even buy tyres off them, let alone touch anything on my car.
