Without alerting potential thieves, and wanting an answer to this question.
Bike marking, registration, yes or no? Paid for etc...
I logged a bike with www.bikeregister.com, after it had been stolen, as I had noted the serial numbers. A few weeks later the police found it (well most of it) when raiding someone's house on another tip, and were able to reunite me with it. The guy was convicted on several counts of handling stolen goods last week.
So to answer your question: yes. It won't prevent a theft but it does give you a chance of getting your stuff back.
Mine are on https://www.immobilise.com/
It is free, ties into the UK National Property register, and lets you upload photos and descriptions. You can use it for phones, laptops etc too.
Also it's the one that my local police (Northumbria Police) use:
http://www.northumbria.police.uk/advice_and_information/crime_prevention/mobile_phones/register/
2 of my bikes have been security marked. Offered free by the police round here. Others haven't but they don't get taken to work
Immobilise too - discounts on insurance because of it.
Bikeregister.com here, the mid level marker kit on the bizango and the top level invisible marking and smart water on the Whyte, it generates an online logbook with facilities to upload pics and note any upgrades, logbook gets transferred up on sale as per cars
Bikeregister also helped in a medical emergency after the rider of a marked bike collapsed, plod saw the marker, logged on to the police database and gave details to medics and riders fambo, so an unintended side benefit, for the win
cool.
May get it done now.
