Sadly my MiL died a couple of months ago.
She had been a carer for the FiL, who is registered disabled. He does have some independence but can't look after himself long term.
My wife's family are trying to come up with the best solution for the FiL, so he is looked after.
If we moved him to a flat close to the SiL, could she claim the carers allowance, on the basis of regular visits to check on him, pre-prepare meals etc?
Or would he have to move in with her, if she wants to claim the allowance?
I don't want to get directly involved but would like to understand the system a but better,so at least help the Mrs out a bit.
Would Citizens Advice be able to help explain our options?
Don't think I have the strength to try and deal with the DSS directly.
Talk to Adult Services at your local Council. I've found them to be helpful and very understanding of the needs of the elderly.
You may want to Google Attendance Allowance, there's different levels.
Thanks for that. I'll try the council.
As CG has said talk to Social Services they have been very supportive with helping me care for my wife (she's not old but needs total care these days) I don't claim anything though just they have been great at sorting out care for her so I can go to work & pay taxes ๐
