Met almost no-one on the towpaths, crisp Siberian landscape and chance for some lovely photos. I'm glad my diesel refused to start!
I gave it a miss this morning -15 just a bit chllly for riding!
I am bloody jealous.
Oh and can all these uber cold commuters please post pics of or at least list the kit they were wearing, and whether or not it worked?
Can't see how I'd be able to keep my fingers and toes warm for more than a couple of miles in that. Fair play to you for doing it, I'd choose to walk in those temps.
we need pictures here!
On Tuesday it was about minus 6 or 7 I reckon.
I had on:
Two Howies base layers a pair of Endura Humvee 3/4s, a buff for the head and a buff for the neck. Endura Event Overtrousers and Endura Stealth Jacket. For the hands I had a pair of Sealskins thermal gloves for the feet I had a pair of thin socks and a pair of thermal sealkins and normal SPD shoes.
My commute is only 6 miles but I was taking it very easy so it took around 40 minutes, I was warm apart from my feet which were pretty cold by the time I got to work
nice pics 🙂 - what is your route ?
Coffee, looks vaugly familiar, is that the Grantham-Nottingham canal?
What time was it for it to be -17? About -5 when I set off about 8:20.
(shorts, leggings, thermal base, fancy winter jacket, windproof, MW80 boots with neoprene overshoes, big gloves and a hat under my helmet, absolutely fine other than the ice in my beard)
Catch the canal at Torrance and follow it all the way down to Bilsland Drive, then scoot into the west end.
Andrewh - nope 🙂 Forth and Clyde canal north of Glasgow.
Got stuck with a 3x1 gearing system too!
It was "only" minus 8 yesterday in the shire. So it was, from top to bottom. Millets special fleece hat, under armour base layer, mid weight fleece, gore-tex jacket, Endura tights, sealskins socks and gloves, shimano race SPDs. Toasty.
Lucky I have a few decent hills within 5 mins of the house to get the blood pumping. Riding in these conditions is as good as in summer, if you have the right outlook and tolerance to the cold!
Though i did go for a run at lunch in just shorts, a helly and my trusty fleece hat. Lost feeling in my hands after about 2 minus! 😆
Humvees over DHB tights, Montane Velo over a Gore Vista jersey and Howies merino base layer.
Sealskinz merino socks, Buff, Endura Baa Baa merino skull cap and Sealskinz gloves over some light Gore gloves used for running.
-8 yesterday morning apparently, only 6 miles though.
I've been wearing
On my head a helmet. On some of these colder mornings I've worn a buff but that can get a bit sweaty.
Buff round my neck. See the above sweaty comment
Very thin base layer, probably a vest, normal thin cycling jersey. Aldi neoprene jacket.
On my hands I wear some very thin wollen gloves and some Endura windstopper gloves on the top of them.
On my legs some lycra shorts and some endura baggy shorts
On my feet two pairs of thin socks and my superb NorthWave Celcius boots.
Toasty warm!
Fun isn't it!
Minus 13C yesterday morning, and out for over two hours last night in --11C and deep snow.
I was very toasty in a thin merino baselayer and Buffalo jacket. Gore Windstopper tights, merino socks and Shimano MW80 boots. On my head I had a Sugoi skullcap with a Buff wrapped round my neck. An old pair of Specialized split-mitts kept my hands warm.
My personal low is -18C. Not fun as that was 17yrs ago and I had very poor clothing compared to now.
On road I find I need a thin hat or a buff or something under my helmet to keep by baldie forehead warm if it's sub zero, but you do tend to move fast on road. I used to have this really thin balaclava which was ace at keeping your cheek bones warm too.
If it gets cold again down here I'll start riding for bragging rights 😉
-14 here apparently.
LS tee, softshell, jeans, DM boots & windstopper head band.
my canal route today. only -5 today mind 😉
Been chaving it in ronhills & 3/4 Humvees, cheap Aldi overshoes and head cap (which are quite good tbh) plus Helmet. eVent waterproof plus Hi-Vis (its not me in the pic btw), fleece & bamboo tshirt, plus old pearl izumi gloves and a croakies neck warmer.
Commando underneath all that of course 😉
Came the same way myself this morning CK - had to keep stopping to put my chain back on, as the SS tensioner is not tensioning in this cold! I love seeing the young deer running along the ice.
The bit between the leisuredrome and Possil is a lot better today than it was on Monday - that bit alone took me about 45 mins at the start of the week.
Normal gloves under snowboard mitts has been a winner so far.
It was 15 below this morning on my commute, so my singlespeed has been called back into service as it tends not to freeze up as badly.
Thin Ron Hill skullcap, helmet and a buff around my neck.
Buffalo Special Six smock
Lycra shorts, Altura waterproof baggies over them
Thin running socks, then mid-light Seal Skinz
Summer cycling shoes over them - Specialized BG Sport
Three season Edinburgh Bikes gloves.
i think the coldest its got in birmingham has been -9 which was monday night, managed to cycle in every day which has been pretty fun!
this is the kit i used
rapha cap, endura headband
howies tryg shell, aldi mid layer with howies vail merino as a base layer
endura 3/4 with aldi leggings and merino ski socks on
with some aldi winter cycling gloves as well.
Dunno haow cold it was in edinburgh this morning - minus teens at a guess.
My kit - Hiking boots. one pr normal socks, uniform trousers, waterproof trousers over them t shirt, jumper, softshell, waterproof jacket. Woolly hat, aldi winter gloves. Nice and toasty.
2tyred - I saw some other tyre prints come and go, must have been yours!
Didn't see any deer though 🙁 I took my cam especially for them too!
I am bloody jealous.Oh and can all these uber cold commuters please post pics of or at least list the kit they were wearing, and whether or not it worked?
List of kit for my -16 commute:
North Face Wooley hat under helmet
North Face Tri-Climate Coat
Nike All Conditions Ski Pants
Karrimore Waterproof Boots
Fleece Thermal Gloves
Charge Plug Fixie
minus teens for me the other day.
sealskin socks
pearl izumi trainer style shoes
lycra shorts and tights with fox waterproof ish pants
altura warm thermal LS top
summer SS top
Endura waterproof
beanie hat
buff
helmet
and F-off big mountaineering gloves.
toasty for 2 hours
You lot dress like girls!
I knew someone had to keep Rab et al in business!
EDIT: I did see a guy cycling to work in running shorts 😮
A comparatively hot -7 in Newcastle.
trainers, neoprene socks, bib tights, merino base layer, fleecey jersey, waterproof, buff. My hands went numb with silk liners and sealskin mtb gloves but then they always suffer. The rest of me waws fine, infact a bit hot. The difficulty is balancing the first 5 minutes when you are warming up with the ext 30 when you are moving.
Bike was playing up. SS tensioner stiff and I snapped a spoke on the front wheel 🙁
I once cycled 3 or so miles across Hereford in -2 ish conditions in a loose cotton t-shirt. Was bloody cold I can tell you.
Great efforts!
Made 18 miles each way in -12°C on Friday but have been in the metal box so far this week.
If I could get in along my normal back lanes / sustrans route I would have been on the bike this week but ice / deep snow has prevented it.
Mixing it with the trucks and cars at -15°C on frozen slush, with little overtaking space is a step too far, for me at least.
It wasn't -17 in Glasgow this morning so wherever your getting your temp from then it's way out. Yeh it was cold -12, but not -17.
cycled in yesterday 6 miles round trip through glasgow clearly a short journey, but i was well prepared:D, it's was some where around the -8 to -12 mark...wasn;t in today, but this setup will do me in the morning again!:)
head: bergus thermal balaclava type thing, pull right up over my nose, i cut a hole in it so i could breath properly through it at the mouth
top: 2 cheap, 15-20quid wicking layers, altura thin fleecy cycling top, and on top of that a peter storm waterproof shell.
bottom half: had on 1 pair underwear, just normal then boxers on top of that, a pair of mid wieght combat trousers and then on top of them a pair of hydraflex(that's what the label says, dunno some one gave them to me) waterproof over trousers, think they are for golf...
feet: sealskin mid thermal merino waterproof socks with a pair of gortex north face trainers.
hands: a pair or trekmates water proof gloves i bought from tiso.
absolutely toastie, barring my feet, they were a bit cold... tomorrow i'll be cutting up a bit of poly bag and wrapping my toes up a bit better outside my socks in side my shoes. 🙂
my flatmate recorded -10 today in her car. It felt colder than the -13 we had on monday, due to the wind chill.
I was ok in
nice warm tights
summer spd shoes
overshoes (combo not warm enough)
stretch endura base layer
fleecy Aldi windproof jacket
hi-viz gilet
buff under the helmet
baggy shorts on top
mountain equipment Guide gloves
same combo too warm on the way home, so unzipped most of the way.
15 miles, 1 hr 5 each way.
I was wearing M&S slacks, ultimate non iron shirt and Northface softshell in the car. Still had to have the heated leather on 5. It was -0.5C in London. Buuurrr
🙂
It's when you throw in windchill that the scary numbers arrive... Seemed warmer today, either that or I managed to cause some sort of nerve damage to my face yesterday
