After giving up on the idea of a projector I'm after a big cheap TV for the garage, I will mainly be watching streamed movies and you tube so quality is not so important

Budget is £400

Best I've seen so far is £279 for a 50inch (anything larger seems to blow the budget)

Why ?

I realise digihome is not a big name brand but I also have an ISIS TV and that's fine

'Digihome' is Vestel. Vestel manufacture products that are branded as Panasonic and Toshiba in Europe.

Branding is a funny old thing, just look at Littlewoods/Very etc. and how they alter price of the same product depending on the shop front. Snobs and wannabes pay more for the same thing.

Edit : Obviously not quite the same thing but you know what I mean...

Just because it's made in the same factory doesn't make it the same thing.

Weird that you understood that to purport to the tv thing. I actually meant the products offered by the Littlewoods Corp and the way the price varies depending on which outlet you visit.

It's a sleeper TV, one day it will activate and behead you.

I didn't mention a TV. 😀

I didn't mention a TV.

Then your comment makes no sense.

Check it for yourself. Visit Very, Littlewoods and any other stores they own and compare the prices of identical products. If you purchase from one you will pay more for the 'image' that particular store is projecting or you believe fits with your lifestyle choice or whatever drives folk to stick to certain shops and brands. Snobs will pay more for not wanting to shop at Very and happily pay more to shop at the perceived higher class of outlet.

Can't believe I had to explain that but hey, here we are.

Anyway, big tv for a garage - as you were.

Oh!

I completely misread your post. So shop around you say. Well there's something obvious.

Well there's something obvious.

I'm gonna guess that you're not such an arse when dealing with folk face to face.

No, I've met him, he's an arse. (-:

Why ?

Because every no-mark large screen TV I've ever seen has been toilet. Sure, they tick all the specification boxes on paper / on websites, but the panels have been inferior, the speakers cheap and nasty (in an arena where even good ones are poor), EPGs have been next to useless and the menus painfully slow to respond.

Now, this is purely my anecdotal experiences; as you yourself have shown with your Jihadivision set, someone else's equally anecdotal experience may well differ. But you were soliciting opinion, and that's mine. I could well be wrong.

Much appreciated cougar, if the branded was only a touch more expensive then maybe I could justify it or if it was my living room TV

I guess I'm not overly worried about quality as its mainly you tube vids and KODI streams which are not the best quality anyhow

I won't use the EPG as I have a PC connected and have a sound bar so maybe that factors out a couple of the cheapo issues

This is the latest favourite

if you're steaming stuff in a relatively small space don't get anything like 55" - it will make the poor resolution of the source worse.

I hope that you are sitting a long way from the set, large tv of dubious quality and low quality source sounds like a match made in heaven

When does a Man-Cave become a porn theatre?

tbh My usual rule-of-thumb with TV's is to buy a Toshiba, so whatever the cheapest you can buy a large one for would be my vote. And a quick Google suggests £400.

Jihadivision set

beaten to the punchline!! 😉

but i agree with Cougar that the reason the non-premium brands are cheaper is because usually they use inferior spec components. sure the bigger brands may use the same factoryy to have their products assembled but these tv's are built to a certain spec using certain components...the cheaper brands dont always use the same quality of components.

if you want a bargain from a one of the big brands you need to find a Currys clearance store. the stock they have there is mainly stiff that hasnt sold or is about to be replaced by a newer lineup of models. some of the stuff might be ex display, missing/damage to the packaging.
you still get the full 12 month guarantee from Currys and the prices can be negotiated...plus you can ask them to test the tv for you there and then to make sure you're happy.
we bought a brand new £600 panasonic tv for just over £200 because the the remote was missing....they then found the exact remote for the tv in one of their demo trays and gave us that.
while we were there we spotted a 50in panasonic led tv going for just over £300 but the wife refused to get something that big.
they also instore hold auctions twice a week so you may grab a bargain there too.

Extremely large and cheap televisions at our local British Heart Foundation charity shop thing. Huge ones! CRT's and stuff. For £30 a go.

That would be my choice for a garage telly.

You'd need a garage just to fit a 50" CRT in!

Uh huh, I'm guessing that you'll be wanting one with a wipe clean screen then...

I too am a fan of second hand TV's last one 40" Plasma veira for £40, one of the advantages of the older ones is that they were big enough to have decent speakers, so no need for soundbars etc. I stream via an old Wii but you can get HDMI to composite adaptors.

It's a good job no one claimed that, then.

Heres a couple of options for you.
Cheap Toshiba:-
http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/toshiba-50l2436db-50-full-hd-1080p-led-tv-freeview-hdmi-and-usb-record-function.html
Cheaper Blaupunkt:-
http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/blaupunkt-50-inch-1080p-full-hd-led-tv-freeview-hd-pvr-recording-black.html.
Cheap Techwood:-
http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/techwood-50ao1b-50-full-hd-led-freeview-hd-tv.html.

Personally I'd trade the size of the above for the Plasma screen on this Samsung as it will probably smooth out the streams from your Kodi/YouTube setup and end up with a better quality pic.
http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/samsung-pe43h4500-43-plasma-tv-hd-ready-720p-600hz-with-freeview-in-black.html.

Regards the etailer they have a bricks and mortar shop in Oldham that I have bought Panasonic TV's from in the past.

I have the plasma mentioned and it really is rather good - only downside is no inbuilt hd tuner but thats no big deal if you are going to feed it from a media box

Totally OT but some neat tag team work by the mods up there. I'll set 'em up and you knock 'em down etc. Do you two practice this sort of thing?
