Following on from the design classic thread, I quite fancy an anglepoise style lamp but have no intention of paying for an original.
I see that there are a few options, John Lewis do one for about £60 delivered, loads of cheap ones on Amazon and Ebay for about £20.
Any recommendations?
Check out their website as there's an outlet section, also they have an Ebay store.
The thing about design classics is that they hold their value. Yes, theres some immediate depreciation, but buy a good used example on eBay and you can use it for years and, if you look after it, sell it for what you paid for it (more in all likelihood as it new price will go up over time and second hand values with it).
by far the cheapest bike I've ever owned was my first Brompton given what I sold it for at 10 years old. Likewise my used Aeron sold after 10 years for more than I paid for it. As did a Hilleberg tent.
If you're not in a hurry, you can sometimes pick up an original (1227)for around £100.
Just steer away from the Etsy/Hipster crowd that price them like they are made of gold. 😉
There's a Black 1227 (square base) up on Ebay just now,£100 or offers.
I picked up a (very rare) Harris and Sheldon No 90 lamp for £80.
I have never seen one before and can't find much info on it
It's an Anglepoise design, but all the struts are steel and it's much taller.
It has been well looked after and will be lovely when it's cleaned up and rewired.
There is still good stuff out there.
I like the Paul Smith Anglepoise for no other reason than I like the colour variety.
They aren't a million pounds - I'd save up and get a genuine one which has stood the test of time rather than a clone which will be effectively worthless if you ever come to sell it.
How accurate to the original do you want/need? Do you want 'proper' anglepoise as a design thing, or just need a decent work lamp?
Ikea do a couple of anglepoise style lamps, one with a desk clamp and one with a base, bith in a variety of finishes and colours. They're normally £15 afaik, but I got a couple for £10 in a members deal a while back.

Thought the same RNP
So I now have an original (1227) stripped down, it's getting all the parts painted up for my take on the Paul Smith version 👍 🙂
If you can hold your nose, B&Q did do a nice looking Anglepoise inspired lamp which I have on a desk here. I can't really fault it.
The range also have some surprisingly attractive lamps too

thanks, this I didn’t know.
Yet another thread I should have steered away from and never opened. Also checked out their eBay outlet store and got a discount on the white Paul smith 75 full size lamp. Which I’ve bought for my home office, £120 I wasn’t planning on spending this morning, but hey ho.
and I’d only opened the thread to say that I’ve had 2 from long long time ago, when my company moved to a new office and they were just throwing everything out, so I took mine and another home. I think one is somehow on the original bulb. They just last forever.
they really are design classics. Lovely looking lamps.
