Ideas please!

Just got given a 3 year old, but immaculate 22" HP touch smart PC. But, we are a mac family (like, fully mac- apple tv, airport express, the works). The machine is beautiful, but I am really not sure what to do with it.

In the kitchen as a radio/video/cookery book/occasional kids games machine/iTunes jukebox?

Anyone know if I can screen share from a MacBook laptop across to it (thus as a rather funky monitor?) it doesn't,t have the right inputs, but might be a way to do order wifi?

Thoughts appreciated!

Kev

Use it as a bedroom tv with a slingbox hd connected to your satellite/cable box downstairs.

zig zag - OK, ultra VNC - check!

bedroom ideas are a no go, we have a weird anti-anti-tv-in-the-bedroom stance. Gets a bit distracting when your in the middle of something else... 🙂

Virtual dart board you say? Well, i did not want to turn this into a haterz thread, but my god, after 8 years away from windows, it really is a stinking pile of very smelly and unfriendly poo. awful.

Kitchen idea I think may fly!

Any other thoughts?

Kev

it's on windows Vista home premium, in german, and i can't even change the friggin language as apparently, Microsoft, in it's wisdom, only allows a language change on Enterprise edition.

Bloody awful. Got iTunes sharing running though, and it's quite good!

lovely big screen on the thing as well, and touch in the kitchen might just work rather well.

If it's so awful, I won't charge to take it off your hands.

🙂

trying to install windows 7 on it now, let's see how we get on.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoy dicking about with PCs just to get them working, something that you really never do with macs. On those, it kinda just works or it doesn't.

Reminds of my first heady days with a 486 sx25, trying to get x-wing, or in fact any games, to run using various book disks and loading drivers 1 by 1 to try and not exceed ram limit. A bit like Apollo 13 really. 😉

Does it have Windows Media Centre capability Kev?If so,you can watch live TV or listen to the radio.I think overall, however ,you will find Mouse and keyboard easier to deal with than a touchscreen.Voice command onWindows 7 premium is supposed to be very good though.Oh,don't forget to download a free anti- virus software.I use Avast. The apes.

think there's a windows 8 beta out now - presumably free like W7 was and specifically designed for touchscreens

(even winduz fans don't like vista)

Yeah, but given the first release of most MS products is a beta, that's really a late alpha - not something I'd choose to use for anything serious. Thanks for the reminder though - was planning on having a go with it on a VM.

Yeh but, to be fair, OP is after something for titting about with, not navigating the voyager mission 😉

Have downloaded W8 and currently putting on a VM - it claims to be a pre-beta, so make that an early alpha. I recommend actually reading the licence terms - not something I'd use for anything approaching real use.
