MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Hi all, I'm baulking at the idea of an Ipad, for a few reasons, but I would like a small light 'computer' to leave about the living room & surf the net & check emails better than I can on my phone.
Battery life would be the most important thing, followed by browsing speed & then weight & ruggedness as it will get used by the kids.
There is a chance I would need to use it to run one automotive diagnostic program on it, but if I did then speed wouldn't matter as long as it worked.
Iv'e seen a few on PC world & they seem quite decent, but is the Atom processor the one to have, & is the N455 much better than the N450?
I don't think the memory will be an issue, but then if it's only £20 extra for an extra 100Gb I would be mad not to.
So, current favorites include this & this, the only thing worrying me is Windows 7 starter, would I need more for basic stuff?
Any real bargains about?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.
My brother had a Samsung, lovely thing. Sold it to a student for more than he'd paid. Replaced with an Android iPad wannabe from somewhere - POS.
Funny that, I was looking at the N10, seems to have good battery, but not much less then the ones I linked to above, but lesser processor & memory, sometimes choice is not all it cracked up to be.
Cheers.

You cant do better than a thinkpad x100e, might pay a bit more but it will last twice as long, so will battery. Better graphics than most net books too.
Thanks for that, but they are a bit over budget, & the battery only seems to last 5 hours?
Cheers.
Whatever you get, get something with a spare user-accessible ram slot, and drop another gig in there for about £15 to get 2Gb, makes a big difference.
Samsung N150 here. Long battery, quick startup from hibernate, good screen, keyboard, good looking too. Very decent machine.
some useful reviews here
on a budget Samsung N110 here and it's fine for browsing and wee stuff. Quick to start and OK at browsing, battery life fin brilliant. Thinking of boosting the available ram, only downside is the teeny wee screen, but even that's pretty clever.
I am typing this on your second choice, which I bought on argos for £229 on Tuesday,so far quite user friendly, and on buy now,pay nowt for 6 months deal, i.e interest free ( as I will pay in full in June)
I have an Aspire One D260, there is a review on The Register of the best Netbooks. Chrome Netbooks should start to hit the market soon.
If its just for browsing and light use you may be better off with a tablet its work noting that table have a resolution of 102*768 whereas Netbooks are limited to 102*600 and this can really make a difference during prolonged use.
Many thanks for all of the help, the review sites are helpful, & the links are always welcome.
Duckman, does your Tosh have a three cell battery? Its just it shows as about half the life of the one on pcworld, & the argos reviews say it doesn't last even 4 hours, what's yours like?
Cheers.
Rather than a netbook (horrible crippled things), have a look at Acer Timeline laptops. There are some out there with 6-8 hour battery life and they are proper laptops with 14-15 inch screens. I bought mine in Tesco last year for £399.
Bought the wife acer aspire for Xmas it's excellent comes windows 7 and 160gb storage under your budget too.
