Nearest 315k house is 6miles away, 2bed modern semi with tiny garden. Nearest house id consider is this, which needs some work

It seems like anything close to a motorway & train station & amenities, whilst also being far enough away to be peaceful, for reasonable money is a tall order.

All these new builds with packed together indentikit houses remind me of factory farming for some reason, I see them being built around Dumfries and the thought of living on such an estate with your allocated 10m2 of fenced in garden is dystopian in nature.
Best? £315k doesn't get you a lot round here unless you want to live on a main road

Bargain at 1.2 mil, the Southdown's way goes right past the house's front gate and then climbs up by the side of the house
Not far from QECP, Harting Down, Kingley Vale and surrounded by countryside and only a few nearby neighbours and a private school (Ditcham Park) at the very top of the hill

Some are better than others, a lot of it depends on the builder / developer. When I moved to the area I'm in now there was one new build estate and some fields. The two new build estates that followed were aiming for the higher end of the market. So the houses have bigger plots, have a good mix of different designs and materials. The street layouts are better and make better use of things like little wooded areas and streams and they left green space all around them.
Following that there was a house building orgy and the packed together, identikit, white roughcast homes are what went up. Complete with narrower roads and limited greenspace.

This is what I found in Bristol . . .but is in quite a disadvantaged estate.
Daughter lives just around the corner from there. Kids play in the street, pump track across the road and Sourdough available less than 2 miles away. Well built ex-council houses*. I doubt you'll find better in Bristol for that sort of money.
Nearest to me (if I don't expand the search to include the Coleford) is a mere £1.100,000. 😲😲.
