I'm having the family cine films (4800ft/360 minutes worth) transferred to uncompressed avi which I then want to edit and eventually burn a DVD from.
Not looking for any fancy editing features, although I used to work in Post Production so professional features (waveform, PPMs, etc) over consumer gimmicks preferred.
Must be free and suitable for XP.
Recommendations much appreciated.
Movie Maker and windows dvd maker? Not sure if the latter comes standard on xp though.
Actually, Movie Maker on XP is horrible, maybe have a look at Lightworks Beta - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/
I know you said free but I'm really liking Movie Studio HD 10 at the moment. About 22 quid from Amazon.
You can abuse Vegas demos for ever if you're so inclined.

free but won't run on windows without some faffing unfortunately
If you're serious about FREE video editing it's possibly worth setting up a Windows/Linux dual boot just for this.
