Mrs is selling her wedding dress and has an interested party which sounds genuine enough, but we would have to post the dress.

Whats the best way to not get scammed?

Paypal gift, postal order, bank transfer?

in paranoid moments I have made buyers meet me at the bank and paid it into my account with me looking over their shoulder.

Best way would be something that won't be possible to reverse or bounce. When I sell or buy something on Gumtree I always meet up as scammers now started to use PayPal and send fake emails. My mate just had a guy trying to buy his computer. If the person can use PayPal than normal payment or gift option but whatever option is used remember to post the dress with a tracked parcel as what people might do is to try and tell You it was lost in the post and open a dispute for a refund, and without any proof of delivery outcome will be in buyers favour.

In short there is no totally safe way, except for cash on collection (and even then you can get mugged/killed). Cheques and bank transfers can all be reversed weeks later (after they appear to have cleared) if they're found to be fraudulent, and we all know about paypal can take money out of your account for the smallest reason.

IME the safest option is to meet somewhere neutral and take cash, or have a chat on the phone to make sure they're genuine (scammers are usually easy to spot) and then take money by bank transfer.

My way is safe, you watch them put it into your bank account. I filled out the payslip for them. The bank will find out if its forged money on the spot and the buyer gets it in the neck.

postal order is good because you can go & cash it before sending the goods

It's costs them to buy it though so you may have to stand the cost yourself in order to get them to do it

Postal order is a bit old fashioned, but failsafe.

are you guys aware of the cost of postal orders? I was very surprised, and put off paying this way due to it.
