I am after a new camera for my Dad, he had old film slr's and took exceptionally good photo's with it. He wanted a smaller more compact camera he has a Canon ixus but doesn't seem to be able to get on with a screen as he never has his glasses at the critical moment and since repeatedly missing the moment seems to have given up.

Obviously their are now small dslr's are their any other options in the £300 range that have a good optical viewfinder and not a bewildering range of features.

If he likes Canon you could take a look at the Powershot G range. I have a G9 that is a few years old that has a view finder as well as a screen. They are up to the G12 now.

There is a G1-x that has just been released at around 699, so way over your budget but it should have the knock on effect of bringing s/h models down a bit as they drift a bit more "out of date".

Most (all?) non-dSLRs with a viewfinder use an EVF - electronic viewfinder - rather than optical. If your requirement is 'a small hole he can look into' then you've plenty of choice, but if you actually want an optical viewfinder then you're looking at a dSLR I think.
