If you don't have a degree is there anyway to become a teacher? If you have to go down the degree route is there a teaching degree, or is the only option to obtain a separate degree and then do a 1 year teaching course?

I believe some Unis offer a degree where you gain QTS (qualified teacher status) as part of your degree.

AFAIK you need a degree to become a teacher, but im sure someone more in the know will advise better/clarify this

I believe there are some unis that offer a B.Ed. course (i.e. a single degree as opposed to, say, a B.A. followed by a P.G.C.E.).

I thought you just had to never actually leave school?

As others have said - B.Ed and there are some B.A. courses that also lead to an award of QTS.

Alterntively you could look at some of the employment based routes - GTP etc but the G does stand for graduate. There used to be a Registered teacher programme which, i think, you needed a couple of years of Higher ed to get on (HND etc) but not sure if that still operates.

best place to look is on the TDA website

You need a degree - do a BEd or a regular degree with QTS. Do it though - it's the best job in the world.

GCE/GCSE English & Maths, grade c or above.

A degree, followed by a PGCE, which includes teaching practice

or A BEd degree which combines the two above

or Degree followed by on the job training in a school, called GTP or Graduate Training Programme

or SCITT which is a work based degree study on the job type thing

or a degree (2:1 or above) then Teach First, which is PGCE plus leadership course (MBAalike?) thing.

First thing I'd do is get into a school or two as a volunteer and see if you like the environment

I am currently in the process of becoming a teacher, I am doing an ou degree and after getting 240 (equivalent of two years full time) I am hopefully going on the RTP (registered teacher program) which is two years working as an unqualified teacher and part time uni where you finish your degree and then do your qts bit. I work p/t in a school as an eta and they are funding me on this route which helps greatly with an gtp or rtp application. I would ring the tda, they are great.

Have you anything like a hnd?

I'm prepared for a slagging here, but I'd say that if your method of research is to ask on a mountain biking website, rather than looking on, say, the Dept Of Education (or Learning and Skills or whatever it's called these days) website, then perhaps teaching isn't your thing.

It's not actually for me, but I get your point IHN, I just thought I'd ask some people with real world experience though.

I would disagree. Been doing it over 10 years; I still love working with the kids, but paperwork, league tables and Ofsted-driven (not necessarily about better educated kids) everything have ground me down. It's now about getting the best stats for the school, which again isn't always the same as what is best for the kids.

Rant over. 🙁

Agreed Clink and as an ICT teacher where our dept is seen as a silver bullet to deliver 4 GCSEs to those kids who "need them" but can't achieve them whereas the kids who can don't need them at all and the CAPS, APS, CAV, 5A*C etc will be just fine with the 1 grade I see your point.

I also think that for variety, opportunity, satisfaction, personal development and God knows how many other brilliant things to do with the job it is second to none. That said I should really have spent this evening writing my year 11 head of house comments rather than what can only be described as pissing around on the web posting on forums!

Surely you have to be remotely capable at imparting knowledge. You know, when you do those psychometric tests and they reveal that you might be well suited to such a role. No point in learning anything if this doesn't suit your personality.

Even if you do have the right traits, will you be able to put up with unruly children and interference from central government, or even parents?

Right job = contentment and fulfillment = success

I'd never do that, obviously! 😆
