Adam Curtis doc - up on some remix sociology tip right hur...
Thanks for the reminder - I nearly forgot to record it.
well - thought it was pretty awesome, really summed up the double bluff trick the bankers used to effectively pull there £ out of the collapsing economy, shifting there debt to a bunch of poor tax payers...
Fascinating (and terifying) stuff indeed. Its worrying to think that an obviously dysfunctional nut-job like Ayn Rand and her mad Objectivism seem to have brought us to this wonderful juncture. Thanks for that!
I loved the bit where that guy was saying that Ayn Rand had told him it was perfectly rational that they should have an affair and so they did!
Ayn Rand - the Godmother of yuppies. A bit like Thatcherism really, look out for no 1 and **** anyone who gets in your way,
I could be wrong however, as I had been objectively imbibing a bottle of fermented grape juice and my rationality circuits were a bit befuddled.
Missed this last night, for which, personally, I blame binners, so will watch tonight.
I find Curtis' use of archive material formidable.....sometimes it feels like the narrative has been massaged to fit the images, but other than that its usually full bore mind blown by the end of the programme.
Its a fair cop guv! There are rumours circulating that the global collapse of the banking system was somehow all my fault too.
I would like to refute this claim in the strongest possible terms. And until someone manages to get the super-injunction lifted, you'll never be able to prove otherwise. So there!
A bit dull, would've been better if someone like Richard Hammond narrated it.
ohhhh anyone got a linky? 🙂

A bit dull? Maybe it would have benefited from some exploding helicopters? Or dancing monkeys?
EDIT: or even dancing helicopters? And exploding monkeys? 😀
Brill, honestly BBC2 has been a pair of old pants for a long time, this was an exceptional programme and really should have been on BBC4 where all the good progs are.
B'out time something got people talking instead of "B'enders"
or even dancing helicopters? And exploding monkeys?
Yeh! Or gigantic super ambulances - come on BBC leave the shock docs to C4, what time does Jeremy Vine start?
I hope my sarcasm is coming across?
anybody seen some of richards older documentaries? 'the trap', 'power of nightmares' and 'century of self' are the ones i've watched but a quick google suggests that there's a few more i need to watch, recommendations?
Monkeys dancing on exploding gigantic super ambulances might be the way forward for BBC current affairs I think rewski.
We should make a pilot and pitch 'em.
Who'd have thought, even a few years back, that one day you'd be able to look at the actual TV schedules and they'd look like Alan Partidge had written them?
Mayfair Set is good.
For a full list go here.
recommendations?
The Power of Nightmares is a must see.
will check out mayfair set, power of nightmares was what attracted me to his work, the trap was next i think... cant remember century of self that well so will have to revisit.
It was pretty good I thought. I hated when he kept repeating 'They thought the Computers would bring stability to the system'.
I'm sure 'they' didn't, however deluded they might have been. Nobody considered 'Computers' to be some magical omnipotent all powerful higher conciousness. 'They' just thought that the processing power of modern computing would give them the tools necessary to keep the system stable. As usual with powerful tools, you can easily make a complete mess very quickly.
Nice to see some properly though provoking TV for a change.
Still not sure I properly understood all of it.
Rand believed in a "free market of desires" free from political or social influence
Greenspan believed in a free market economy also free from political influence.
Clinton believed the opposite and wanted to use political power to effect change but was stymied by the economic situation and almost overthrown when his own desires got in the way of what he wanted to achieve?
All the while our reliance on machines and the "New Economy" was creating an unsustainable economic bubble which as we all know went pop
Might rewatch it tonight on iPlayer
Perhaps they could have had hekilopters with 'Ride Of The Valkyries' as a soundtrack...
Just asked Atlas if he'd seen it.
He shrugged.
Just asked Atlas if he'd seen it.He shrugged.
😐
Very good....can we try the 'pong' experiment on here?Oh....it requires some consensus of opinion does'nt it!!!
Good program. Seemed to do a lot better at explaining why we're where we are than anything else i've seen.
Nobody considered 'Computers' to be some magical omnipotent all powerful higher conciousness
whilst I agree with you I am sure there are many who do believe this. Might be wrong though.
Very interesting program. Got me thinking about the quantitative revolution in geography of the 60's. Was wondering if Rand's thinking somehow influenced this also. Any clever people know? Or you going to make me do my own research.
quantitative revolution in geography of the 60's
Was that when they started having sew on leather elbow patches?
😀
that along with beard density, mustache length and the number of cords in your corduroy all being measured in the pursuit of a higher knowledge.
Thought it was very good
Another stylish offering tonight. More of a low key subject than last weeks but still pretty thought-provoking.
Ayn Rand - the Godmother of yuppies. A bit like Thatcherism really, look out for no 1 and **** anyone who gets in your way,
Uhuh.
She wrote some books. I read one because it was voted the best book in the world by about a million Telegraph readers. I put it down after about 50 pages. It was so dull! I suppose if making money and cocking the little man up floats your boat it would have been good but not for me.
