Someone owes me money, and is claiming that Barclays charge for transfers into non-Barclays accounts (and she can't get to an HSBC branch to pay the cash in directly) and so wont do the transfer as it'll cost her.

Sounds like male cow excrement to me, but I can't find info on the Barclays site, so does anyone know if this is true?

With HSBC, I know that CHAPS transfers cost £25 for same day, but the 3-5 day is free....

Same day might cost but longer than that free - actually many of these free transfers happen same day anyway now.

BTW, doesn't she use the internet to bank? Makes life easier.

I suspect she's right.

I can't see why they would charge for such a service. I am with Natwest and they don't charge for bank to bank transfers including non RBS group accounts. seems like crap to me too. besides whats the alternative? Paypal which also charge the sender if its a gift!

One alternative might be to stop worrying about charges and just give your money back...

Online transfers between personal accounts at the major banks are free and take 2-3hrs now, they improved about 12-18months ago. HSBC (my bank) are definitely included in this, I'm pretty sure Barclays would be too.

Yes but if you walk into Lloyds with a bundle of cash and said "pay this into somebody's Barclays account they wouldn't do it. Certainly not for free. Money laundering and all that. (Does that mean I've broken the law if I left a fiver in my shorts pocket when i washed them?)

Internet banking? Phone banking? "Go into a branch" sounds very 20th century to me.
