Is it possible to be scammed if the scammer only has your bank account details - a/c number and sort code? ie what you need to pay into an account

I didn't think it was but I am not so sure these days.

What's the general opinion?

I'm selling some gear on gumtree and a potential wants to do a transfer. I don't trust him so am waiting for another buyer. Thought i'd ask though

Didn’t clarkson publish his bank details once to prove you couldn’t be scammed?

Someone set up a load of charity direct debits I think.

I suspect account number and sort code are the minimum things someone would need in order to pay for anything being bought. How else would the money get into your account?

So no, it's not possible to scam someone, unless you happen to be giving your bank details to the CEO of Cancer Research!

I was going to say that - however I think you need address now.

Anyway, unless they plan to rock up to the branch with some fake ID and try a confidence scam you’re protected by the DD guarantee.

Cant remember the exact time scales, but it is possible to 'recall' a transfer but pretty sure its only within 24 hrs or so

If you pay anyone by cheque (remember them?) the cheque has your account number and sort code written on it. I don't think there are any scams that work (and the charity DD shouldn't work if your bank are awake) but on the other hand if I need to send somebody my details I sent the a/c by email and the sort code by text, just in case.

In the olden days of BACS payments it was possible to do a recall up to midday of Day 3 (i.e the day it would hit the target account). However, with nowadays's Faster Payments, once it's gone, it's gone.

And a copy of your signature as well, don't forget that.

What do Gumtree recommend as acceptable/safe forms of payment? Stick with those and don't venture beyond.
