9 yr old daughter is very sporty, gymnast swimmer and runner being doing all three for years. this has been her first year running with a club
shes done XC and track but prefers the fell racing and xc.

her school is very right on and dont do competitive sports.. no sports days etc.. but they do have a pe teacher who likes XC..so wanting to do my bit spoke with her and agreed to support school xc team with our minibus this winter and provide team vests ( not out of charity but also for the advertising..)

we set out to offer a weekly after school club in the autumn term and to be stand up i agreed to take the UKA coaching course ( two days no exam).. only to be gob smaked.. they want 190 quid for it and 365 for the kids coach course ( three days)..

550 quid to help out at the school?? i might as well give the moneyto the school and let them dig another £46 k peace garden

That's not a lot really... qualifications to teach adults set gym classes are more than that.

Charge a £1 per session per child, make a profit?

Or who do you think should pay the costs?

£550 for five days of Course/Training seems pretty reasonable to me.

I pay a LOT more than that for Work related training courses.

(it may be a lot "just to help out at school" but the courses need to fund themselves surely ?)

yes i will be helping out my kids but others will follow and i think i should pay the costs but it doesnt cost 550 quid does it. and it hardly opens the opportunity to folk to participate when you want 550 on the table.. should i do like the williams sisters dad and just do what i think will be okay.. he seemed to get on okay?

Hopefully this might change as part of the 2012 legacy.

The amount of money seems reasonable for the course but I can understand that as you are volunteering that you won't want to meet the cost yourself...

I assume you've been through all the "necessary" police checks as well if you are working with kids. Who's covering the costs of those?

You need to charge something for these courses as it filters out those who might do it out of curiosity and never use it for real, it takes time and money to train a good coach.

totalshell - I'm not saying it's cheap and understand where you're coming from here are some reference points though...

£180 = A morning training with Jedi.
£180 = A class session with swimsmooth.
£100 - £200 = A couple of hours bike fit.
>£1000 = A day of accountancy training.
£40 = an hours personal training session.

£550 for five days of training, doesn't seem that bad.

Dont bother with the course, you sound like the right kind of parent to me, just do your research and remember they are kids & just follow your instincts.

Seems a big hit to take, but TSY is right with his comparisons.

And I gather that the initial cost is a one off, unless you choose to go and do further courses? So spread the cost over a few years of coaching may not feel so bad?

Why doesn't it ?

£110/day for any sort of Training seems bloody cheap to me.

Wether it should be you that's paying for it is a different matter. But I can't see any problem with the price of the courses to be honest.

That £550 must already be heavily subsidised.

You might get a better way in via the running club. We get offered subsidised coaching on occasion. Timing might not be right for you though.
