R5 extra on now, not sure if its a 11:30 or 12:00 start. Think we've had the toss already.

Heads up guys - play due to start today at 11pm our time.

England just ahead, but far from there yet given Aus were 140/4 (and 143/5) in Brisbane, then 450/6 (and those two chaps are due to come striding out this morning).

Right now 250 would be disappointing for England - though if one thing's true about Aus, they do keep coming back (and have a few left who can bat a bit).

was at the scg yesterday, slow going but great atmosphere, the aussies have not got a clue when it comes to getting a good song going to spur the team on...also they are so easily bated. Good day, spoiled by poor weather in the arvo.

Well we're just ahead I'd say. Really need a decent first innings lead here though (and to get MJ to bowl a few overs to make some nice rough for Swanny). Time for Colly to step up (and Cook to get another big ton?)

to mix fighting metaphors; after Melbourne the Aussies were on the canvas needing to get up quickly. But now it's turned Ultimate Fighting, and England are piling in with hobnailed boots, knuckledusters, elbows and sticks and have the opportunity to give them a beating they'll remember for years to come.

Bat on properly for as long as they can tomorrow (keep Bresnan and Tremlett off strike, Prior to milk bowling as best he can) and then let the calm understated Graham Swann demonstrate why the Aussies have been instructed to prepare seamer friendly tracks all summer.

One of the best things about the way these games have gone is that a lot of the start of day sessions have been important ones, so I've seen a lot of great cricket and still been in bed by 0130 most mornings. Best of course had to be 2-0 and 3-2 though. Punter's first baller woke the house up.

and off we go again.

I say, 540 for England, and Oz close the day on 270-6

putting the kiss of death on it, but Prior is up to 66, reckon he might go further, don't think Bresnan will get a good score but looks like he could be there a while. We'll pass 540. I'm happy with it. Will be interesting to see how far the aussies get by the end of the day.

Hard to call how today is going to pan out.

Collingwood has announced his retirement from test cricket. Probably right to call it quits but been a great servant to England.

Jumped before he was pushed - sad to see him go, but his time seems to have come.

I reckon they've now removed any lingering idea there might have been of Australia having a chance to win this, so that's the series win. Just need to keep the foot on the throat and make sure e beat them. Strangely I hope Clarke makes a score though, as the evidence so far is that he's a far better sportsman than Punter, so it would be good if he gets to keep the captaincy.

...it is good to see Clarke rotating his main bowlers giving them all a chance of a ton though. Siddle just one away now, though 14 more needed for a Beer.

Colly will finish with a better average than Atherton which is pretty decent i reckon.

One of the best fielders in the world too. As you say his time had come but nice to see his career end on a high rather than get dropped.

Sky have just been running a stat on the catches per match for the Colly / Swann combination; about double that of any other England pairing. That's a bloomin' hard job, slipper to an off spinner as you're always looking over the keeper's shoulder for the ball and often see it late.

Prior on to 90.

Also better than Gatting, Lamb, Alec Stewart, Hussain and Botham. Surprised to see how poor all their averages are, but I suspect it simply proves that it's impossible to compare between eras as the game changes (that and that Colly's avoided hanging on too long and dragging his figures down).

Will definitely be missed for his fielding, but then you'd be looking at dropping a keeper with recent figures like his.

Atherton had a harder set of bowlers to play against. Walsh, Ambrose, McGrath, Warne, Donald, Pollock, Waqar........

I agree, but that's a bugbear of mine. If the keeper was doing his job, holding every catch, keeping tidily, the focal point of the fielding effort AND the batters are getting the runs then why does a keeper have to always score runs too. Healy, Stewart, Gilchrist et al ruined it for the purists like me. I'd have had Jack Russell in every team of mine out of principle.

[edit] Prior 101 off 109 balls.

Well yes, I was a big Russell fan too. If your top 6 always score the runs then you might as well have a glove man who just holds the catches, does stumpings etc. The question though is why shouldn't your keeper be able to do his principle job (none of those you've named was that shabby and nor is Prior) and score runs as well. Coming back to Colly, how do you quantify how many runs his fielding is worth (probably quite a lot, but it's pretty hard to trade just on that).

I didn't mean the three I mentioned before were at all shabby; in fact the opposite. They were all good stumpers but equally good batters (Gilchrist and Stewie could have pushed for inclusion with or without the gloves, as Stewie often did) and created the necessity for a keeper tp also score runs.

How many runs has England's fielding been worth? Probably 30 runs an innings in saved boundaries and then who knows how many runs are saved by not dropping catches. You don't give chances and you don't find out. Bar Watson twice in the last test (and then we got him cheap anyway) I can't think of a missed chance? So to answer you - Colly catching Punter first ball could easily have been worth 100+

I was wondering that - but then Punter looked out of touch enough that I'm unconvinced he'd have scored big anyway. Ifs and buts - Punter went (though he'll probably be back after this showing 🙁 ) and now so has Colly.

All sorts of records going here. England join an exclusive group who've scored over 500 in 4 matches of a series - only been done 3 times before (Aus twice, SA once) and the only team to manage it against anybody other than WI.

If England don't bat again (and who'd bet against that given Australia have only once managed more than 356 this series) it will be their highest ever series average per wicket against Australia.

Really enjoyed the Australian fan's fancy dress this series - plastic seats. Talk about fair weather supporters! A few aussie wickets and the great sporting public are running for the doors.

At least they can still beat us at swimming. Oh, hold on.... 😉
