Earlier this year i bought OS X snow leopard for my intel mac and have just paid £20.99 for the OS X Lion upgrade from the app store. Everything is working fine.
I bought an iPad 2 last week and love it, got the iOS 5 update with the iCloud etc, but for me to stream photos to my iPads I now have to buy the iPhoto update to do this? WTF I'm really not happy about this, are they taking the piss or what, I have owned apple stuff for years and love it, but I have to pay out more money for something that should just work with the OS updates that I have on my Mac and iPad. Must say Apple have got me now haven't they?

Rant over!!!!

Don't pay it then.

Don't really see the point in the photo stream stuff meeself.
Just use Google Photos or Flickr.

I'll tell you what does take the piss - I would like upcoming calendar entries to appear on the home/lock screen on the iphone. Apparently there is no way to do this without jailbreaking the phone. It did it on my crap old Nokia smartphone.

Didn't Apple get all legal on Microsoft over "forcing" PC customers to use Internet Explorer?

Therefore surely you can use a Non-Apple product to provide the functionality you need.....?

Or were you duped along with the other trillion Apple fanboyz?

Strange that as the notifications screen shows the calendar events on the lock screen here. Using iOS5? I suspect it will break when mobile me dies unless I upgrade to a new home Mac to replace the G5 powermac.

Not sure it was apple , more a case of everyone who had a browser they wanted put onto windows. ( I personally didn't see the issue myself - Windows always allowed you to use another browser and set the alternative as the default )

If you've got iPhoto '11, just go to Software Update and it should update to the latest version - no charge, no problem!

If you've not got iPhoto 11, and you bought the computer this year - might be worth sending support an email?

Upcoming calendar entries appear on the Notifications screen. You can set how many should appear in the Settings.

Entries with alerts set will appear on the lock screen when the alert goes off.

No not got iPhoto 11, all my software is up to date, so if I want streaming to iPad then I need to pay for it.

Sorry but iPhoto '11 is a separate product, not sure why you think it should be included with Lion? do you also want Apature, iLife '11 and iWork for free too? What you seem to have done is not researched before you purchased.

Not sure I get your point. I recently moved to Windows 7, but I didn't expect it to upgrade Microsoft Office while it was at it.

They appear in the Notification Centre thingy reached by swiping right down the screen yup, but not on my lock screen. Is it only if you've actually set an alert that it appears there? That is a bit poor TBH. Why can't the actual Notification Centre thing come up on the lock screen?

Yup.

Dunno. Maybe they didn't think it was cool to display lots of personal private information on a lock screen?

Poor only if your only event is a reminder to pick the kids up from football or whatever. If you have multiple meetings, events and personal calendars i dont think it would have enough space, nevermind when you start adding in a barrage of emails, ebay notifications, twitter/facebook etc. As it is my notifications centre is getting pretty crowded, ive already switched some apps back to the little red number for notifications to free up space for important stuff.

Surely you just need to go into settings and select 'view in lock screen'?

Also, re the original post. I'm not sure what your point is. As far as I can tell, you paid for one piece of software and seem to expect to get another for free?

Not to sound like a millionaire, but iPhoto is only £10 on the app store.

I thought it was that loads of stuff has to use IE, which makes it an undeletable part of windows?

Yup. Entirely accurate because when I went from Microsoft Office 2003 to 2007 to 2010 it cost me absolutely nothing. Oh no, wait... 🙄

[s]Well, no. Not really. The last major update of the OSX operating system, Lion, was £20. iPhoto is £10, whereas previously it has shipped free with macs as part of iLife..... [/s]

Oh what's the point....

To be fair they only had $28 billion revenue last quarter, they can't afford to be giving stuff away for free

Tesco had £60.3 billion revenue last year, but bizarrely they still insist I pay for my beans.

There's a market down the road where you can get your beans for free. You've just got to put in a little effort, mind.

to be fair to the op I sympathise - he's had os upgrades forced on him & now doesn't have the functionality he had before the upgrades without paying out more money for the latest version.

PrinceJohn - I take it you've never tried to install Office 2010 on Windows 95 then?

And he hasn't had OS upgrades forced on him!! He opted to purchase Lion...

This functionality did not exist before. He's not lost anything, just whining about spending £10 to add a new feature to the £1500+ he's already spent.

Nope - cos there are free alternatives...

When you buy all those you know you have to buy everything. Apple are inconsistent when it comes to such things, itunes is free to get people to use it, you get a copy of ilfe for free bundled when you buy a mac, but if you want to keep it up to date every year you have to purchase each element.

But it doesn't have a shiny apple on it.......I'll be honest, i used to want a Mac and an I-phone, but as I get older I see the prices going through the roof and more people bending over.

[smug] My £500 laptop runs only free software and i'm able to do everything i need to [/smug]

You only know what you need to get full functionality if you read the specifications properly. The OP clearly didn't.

I got a copy of iLife 09 when i bought my last Mac, but if i want the upgrade and new functions of iLife 11 i don't expect it for free. Updates and upgrades are different.

When i upgraded to iOS5 on my iPad i knew i wouldn't be able to mirror it with my television through Apple TV because that only works on iPad 2s. I don't get all annoyed because i'll have to buy a new iPad to use that function.

I have a new Mac Mini with iPhoto 11 installed. I wanted the photo streaming from my phone, tried the App Store upgrade route, it said can't do that, the software is already installed. Looked at installed software to get an update, but iPhoto isn't listed. Brainwave; went to apple.co.uk, support, software upgrades. Found a whole bunch of uprades including the upgrade to allow Photo Stream in iCloud and iOS5. Downloaded it and installed it and it works fine. Cost?
Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Nothing. Instead of being a whiney little girl, perhaps the OP might like to actually use the fracking Internet and find out stuff.

these threads always make me laugh. you cant even mention apple on here without somebody banging on about how youre a fanboy. why cant people own it and[u] moan about it? if you dont like apple for whatever reason, dont post on an apple thread. same as if you dont like the alternatives dont post on those threads either. if you dont like iphones, dont buy one. but why people then feel the need to abuse people who do buy them is beyond me. all these threads turn into are willy waving contests.

whatever happened to each to their own.

i buy heinz baked beans. i know that there are other products available for cheaper that are essentially the same thing. but i like heinz ones. i can afford them (get me) so i buy them. i dont feel the need to stand down the bean isle in asda hurling abuse at the people buying own brand beans.

Forced how?
My Mac still works fine on Leopard, just cos I haven't gotten round to buying the latest OS. To date no bailiffs have been round to strongarm me into installing Snow Leopard or Lion.

Too late now - but if it's an recent mac, you had iPhoto '11 on your system disks and can install with a few clicks.. no need for the purchase!
