I'm looking for a gadget that allows me to stream music wirelessly from my macbook (iTunes) to my hifi amp. I already have a wireless network.
The Airport seems to fit the bill but there are a couple of reports suggesting the music stutters and pauses when surfing t'internet with the same computer the music is being streamed from.
Does this tend to happen?
I've got a 'g' network, which should easily be fast enough to cope with a 8meg internet connection and stream music.
The only problem with 'stuttering' I've had was when the wireless connection to my macbook wasn't too brilliant - the stage where the connection strength makes surfing the net a pain.
I've not had a problem with surfing taking up too much of the bandwidth for he music...
The airport express was 'interesting' to set up with the netgear router I'm using, but possible 🙂
if you have a PS3 already I think there is software that enables itunes and other stuff to stream to that from your mac

B*gger, I have a netgear router too!
I've heard setup is either 5 mins or 5 days so I'll hope it's the former.
Alas the wife won't let me have a PS3. I have an xbox 360 (1st gen) but the fan is far too loud to use it as a music streaming basestation.
haha yea, not quite 5mins to set up... that is unless you have your router and airport express wired together with network cable.
from memory 😯 for a wireless connection:
connect the 2 together with a network cable, and go through the set up, as join an existing network.
go back into the airport utility
change the wireless settings so it connects to your netgear router, as 'join a wireless network'
put your WEP password in with a # at the start. *edit may be a $*
re-boot the airport express and it should* all work!
I'll have a quick look and see if I can find a better guide for you.
With macbook, netgear router and airport express - I found it to be just about 'plug and play', the only thing I had to do was tick some boxes that OSX told me to. If you've an iphone, or ipod touch, you can (must!) get the 'remote' app. It's amazing - computer sits out of the way upstairs and you can choose what music plays through what speakers remotely on the touch screen (though for multiple sets of speakers, you'll need multiple airport express units). The music does very occasionally cut out, but that's down to our rubbish Virgin Internet connection.
I'm a big fan of Apple kit but I've had a surprising amount of hassle setting up Airport Expresses.
You could look at Logitech Squeezebox kit - pick up an old model off eBay. They have a good buffer so no stuttering issues.
I bought an iPod Touch partly so I could stream music from the computer upstairs down to the hifi; then I suddenly realised that as all the music is on the ipod anyway I could play it anyway without bothering with any streaming shenanigans. Does the job... 🙂
I'm using an Airport Express with PCs and a Netgear ADSL router. Easy to (initially) set up and no problem with stuttering at all.
I had problems with it stopping working (so iTunes couldn't see it) which I eventually traced to the monitor process it installed on the PC running under different logged on users. Killing this removes the issue.
I'm also using Airfoil to stream BBC radio to the Airport - and this works fine too.
I had a nightmare setting mine up with an old BT homehub, it just wouldnt work at all. I have since changed to sky broadband and it works well. Well that is once I got over the teething troubles with it being on the same channel as my wireless phones. I had to chnage the channel of my router and it all works fine.
I have noticed some cut outs when surfing the internet at the same, but I dont generally do that that much so not too fussed.
I use airport express and have had some problems. Installed Rouge Ameoba's Airfoil instead and it's much more stable. Has the added advantage that you can use it to stream internet radio/iplayer etc as well.

Was using it with Airfoil to stream all sorts from the PC, then it just stopped working & I can't get it to work at all.
Hi Ric,
I have a netgear router, express and macbook and my experience is the same as willj's - it just did what it said on the tin. Now sitting on the sofa, supposed ot be working on my work laptop (damn this forum!) and choosing my tracks thorugh my iphone. Very cool. Makes me want apple TV now.
Kev
Cheers guys 🙂
I also have a spare BT homehub (newish) router so if the netgear struggles I'll try that.
Router is upstairs and amp/Airport will be downstairs so no way to connect them with ethernet, although I guess I could do it temporarily whilst setting it up wirelessly...
Presume I can plug the Airport into my macbook with ethernet cable and set it up like that using the supplied utility software?
Is there any way to have my macbook stream audio with the lid closed? Doing this always puts the laptop into standby but I'd rather not have the laptop open all the time whilst on the floor in case someone kicks the screen
