Yay or na? I still regard office as the de facto word processing and number crunching software, but as I'm entirely mac I might move over. Are they interchangeable?

Yip, I use it. You can open .doc files and export files in a few different formats. Good bit of software.

In theory yes, in the real world no. Formatting goes all over the shop!

If you need to swap files with PC users you are better to stick with Microsoft.

I used open office the other day, it was cool. I should have guessed about the formatting!

I used iWork throughout my degree and continue to use it afterwards. However my job doesnt require me to use a computer at all so aside from the degree work, it is for personal use. As said above, formatting goes bum-over-face if using heavily formatted files. For plain text it plays happily with Office.

Yeah I do. Much much nicer to use, and no *ing *ing * paperclip.

'Oh, it's looks like you're writing a letter/ Do you need help?'

No, you need to shut the * up you **** smash smash kill destroy now PC bust I've achieved nothing. 😥

Numbers is far, far less painful to use than Excel , and you can do little charts and stuff and don't have to have ninety-five million rows in every document you open.

Used the ipad versions - they are fine for what i need

How ever i wrote my honours project in open office - went to get it printed and the formatting went all to pot despite being exported in .doc format !

So as above if you need to share with office users !

Not any more it does not in any way. It's not saying anything now, is it? No, it's not. 😡

Well, let's just say it won't ever be coming back on....

yes. For anything at home I use pages, loads faster, easier to use, fewer features mean quicker docs. Often for editing PowerPoint stuff I'll use Keynote, partly because Keynote has 'instant alpha' which my versions of PowerPoint (2008 on Mac and 2007 at work) do not, partly because I can. I much prefer PowerPoint 2008 to PowerPoint 2007 but that's a bit OT.

For numeric stuff I detest Excel. Numbers does the job for home things. Excel does a few things at work being the 'cockroach of IT' but for graphs & the like I use Tibco Spotfire and for more sophisticated stuff I ask other folks with SAS software, R, S-plus, Mathematica & even more exotic IT magic to cast the spells.

For words it is difficult to beat LaTeX except in the usability stakes 😉

Even Openoffice has formatting issues when a Microsoft user opens it. I spent ages doing a presentation in the summer and gave it to a colleague to present it for me, I wasn't there at the time and by all accounts it was just a joke! Needless to say I was very annoyed!

Yes but I'm not a heavy user apart from Keynote, which is far better than PowerPoint in my experience. I used to struggle presenting Keynote presentations on (inevitably) windows machines but now I just use an iPad for the presentation.

I'm very tempted. The only bit of software I really have problems with on the mac is Office 2011 (frequent crashes and lock up's.) If I didn't have to work on a lot of documents created in Office then I'd gladly give it up 🙁
