Hi, does anyone use 3/4's like Altura Boulder 3/4 shorts for road bike commutes? I've got a 24 mile commute (round trip) that will now be done on a spech allez instead of a slicked hard tail. don't fancy full jeyboy hatred from fellow hardtails i'll possibly pass now! thinking dual use too for when on mtb. appreciate comments from anyone who has used baggies ok or to be told forget it lycra only on a road bike. thank you guys and gals, Steve

Actually, I was wearing my boulders today on a "roadbike commute". It's a question of "wear what you want" really. The only real downside is that they're awful when wet - and that's why roadies choose lycra.

Oh - and jeyboy isn't allowed anymore.

I use full length riding trousers on my roadbike.

if anyone tells you what you "must" wear on any bike unless you're racing they're a **** (who probably wears little white ankle socks too)

I've just started commuting on a new cross bike; I don't intend to splash out on yet another load of bike kit when my baggies will do the job nicely...

Got two pairs of 3/4 Endura Humvee, which I use on my 15 mile daily commute on my kafenback, now about 2 1/2 years old and showing no signs of use.

If they get drenched, drop them on a rad. at work and they are dry by lunch time. I don't bother with the lyrca shorts they come with, apart from in the middle of winter.

personally Lycra shorts with Ron hill bikesters added for winter
Similar distance to you and baggies are dire when wet and also very heavy.
Wear what you want but Lycra is pretty practical hence why almost every roadie wears it except MTB ers who dabble.

Yes I use 3/4 from under the weather sit and spin...
They are wicked, but then they are designed for commuting

I quite often wear Under The Weather 3/4s, Endura baggies are too annoying to ride any distance over about 200 metres.

Endura Singletrack Baggies, 661 Gloves, Giro Xen, Camelbak Mule, Fox Vanillas, XT brakes with humungous discs, DMR flat pedals, minging trainers, cotton t-shirt, 2.25 cinders. Not a hint of offroad for the whole route. Slow as fek but need the workout and too grippit to buy another bike.

On the odd occasion I actually catch someone on a commute, I pop a lung getting past them and then have to suffer the indignity of them breezing past.

No white socks though.

Thinking about it, I actually used lycra on last scottish merida cos it was so wet and i was SO glad! perhaps my unwillingness to wear lycra on my roadbike is cos i can't display my MTB 'roots' and aligence while on it? ISSUES?! or just thinking about it far too much ha 🙄

Do want to add i was/am thinking of the practical side of it too, i.e. comfort etc. Not just Vanity! The awful when wet for baggies is a good point. 😀

Try minx, otherwise just get them from Canada.

waterproof trousers cut off make good baggies in the wet - keep your thighs and arse dry.

I fancy those Rapha ones - they're in a Schoeller fabric which would make them ideal for street wear. But at £150 a pop......

Exactly the same apart from 30 miles on a CX bike and I never use the liners that they come with, full bib shorts underneath (though I have 3 miles under the Mersey on a train so the lack of lycra stops the giggles 😳

The awful when wet for baggies is a good point.

Well most of baggies design fro commuting are made of very quick drying material. So when mine is wet, I chuck it on a rad or in the cluster room and it' way dry before lunch.
If it bother you, I use the "ebay camo gortex" cut trousers technique.

24 miles in joggers? TJ is having a laugh there!
I just wear baggies, with knee/leg warmers when its colder.
Cerainly not bothered about what I'm seen in while riding, but I look silly in lycra, so couldn't walk into the office wearing it!

EDIT: 3/4 lengths look silly on anyone

I wear my Royal Baggies (DH style) on my commute with some uber padded Pearl Izumi Lycra underneath. This is on my Specialized Roubaix road Bike. I just wear whats comfy.

Today I wore just a pair of gore baggie shorts, but when it is a bit colder I wear the Rapha 3/4 with the Schoeller fabric as I can't quite bear the thought of walking into the office in lycra! I bought them when they were on sale so they we less than the £120 regular price, still pricey though.

I tend to wear a pair of lightweight zip-off hiking trousers over padded shorts. They dry easily, don't look too wierd in the pub and can be zipped off if it's roasting hot. My bike has a chainguard and mudguards, and I am a devotee of the trouser clip. 11 miles each way. 🙂

By Friday I'm reduced to wearing whatever is vaguely clean/dry so yes (unless I've got a pass out for a Saturday ride).
