I know nothing about the darned things, other than I need one to store our photos and back up documents, suspect music will go on when I join the 21st century.....I've been told I need 1TB, so it must be true.
Can anyone recommend one, and preferably a reputable on line supplier doing a good deal.

Do you want one which is just powered by the USB lead, if so you're looking for a 2.5" and they are about £100-£150 for 1TB.
If you don't mind having an external power supply for the drive, then the 3.5" drives are about £60-£80.
