Southern France, suitable for the seaside.  Seems like everything's being taken over by gigantic expensive holiday park type places.  I'd love a small site near a town and a beach.  Any recommendations?

My knowledge is very out of date (15 + years) but there used to be an reasonable municipal site at Banyuls Sur Mer. About 20 minutes walk to the beach.

Looks like a lovely place but the beach seems to be stones...

Drive a couple of days more and stay at Tarifa.  Genuinely lovely town, fantastic beach, loads of camping.

We have often stayed at Camping Le Dramont near St Raphaël. It’s a lovely mid sized campsite where you can get pitches directly looking at the sea. Just looking at their website it seems they have also been taken over by a holiday park but I would think they act more like an agent.

Another nice campsite is camping de la plage just outside st Tropez. It’s probably too big for your taste but if you are lucky you could get a pitch on the other side of the road directly on the beach which feels completely separate from the rest of the campsite. It’s also right next to the old town of Port Cogolin which is lovely....like a mini Venice (rammed with tourists though).

I'd always assumed that side would be very expensive. But if it's not then I'm interested.

A couple of years ago we stayed in Argeles.  Self-styled European capital of camping.  We assumed we'd hate it but we stayed for about 10 days.  Would be happy to go back.

Argeles looks good from a cycling point of view.. next to the hills.  Wonder if it's worth taking the 29er.

Sorry for not replying earlier Molgrips.

Even though we were camping on the rest of the trip, whilst in Argeles-sur-mer we were at a friend's house.  But couldn't help seeing hundreds of campsites around, many of which looked like the kind of place we would have been happy to stay at.

We took bikes and did all sorts of riding.  The trip to the chocolate-box town of Colioure was good in a touristy way.
