Looking to get my lad a first laptop - win10 or a chromebook. He likes minecraft a lot and from what I'm reading that needs a bit of fiddling to get to work on a chromebook - anyone know? Is it something that just needs setting up or will it always be a bit compromised?

I think he'd prefer the more app-based structure of the chromebook but no minecraft would be a shame.

You'd need linux on it. I'm guessing that the mobile 'pocket edition' isn't going to cut it.

I'd opt for a Windows Laptop, personally.

Don't get a Chromebook if you want Minecraft. They are great for a lot of things but Minecraft is squarely outside that domain.

You can however play it on a pretty low powered machine so you won't have to spend a lot. When people talk about 'gaming' laptops they mean the latest Call of Duty or whatever, but Minecraft does not need a lot of power.

Thanks.

wrt gaming have you ever tried that playstation now thing on a laptop? Would love to play bloodborne but don't own a PS4, do own a couple of laptops - wondering if you'd need a lot of power for it to work acceptably.

I just installed it using the linux console and the java version. It works but it is really slow so next to useless. Maybe I should try to see if I can increase the memory.

Disappointed that I cannot install the pe edition as that works fine on my phone and tablet but for some reason it is not compatible with the chrome book.

That 'for some reason' is because it's a totally different system. It's like saying 'for some reason I can't understand what anyone says in France' or 'for some reason these Land Rover parts don't fit my Toyota' 🙂

It isn't a completely different system. Most Chromebooks do support Android apps. But If the app is marked as incompatible, it won't let you install it from Google Play.
Seems it might work if you can get the APK, then install that on the Chromebook manually.

Molgrips. Just to explain if you do not get what I meant. Not so technical but on a chrome book you can install android apps. Scaling is a bit strange sometimes but they work ok. For some reason though the ability to run minecraft pe has been disabled on my type of device as it is incompatible.

Basically I have a feeling they are just being mean.

Ok it seems recently they do, but it is (or was) a different system despite being Android based. Android has lots of variations even among phones and tablets, there are (or were) a fair few games and apps that are only supported on some devices.

I'd expect something along the lines of not enough graphics hardware to support the game or something similar. I doubt they'd limit the potential of their machines just to sell other different devices. They aren't Apple afte all 🙂

Sorry for the slight thread hijack. I'm looking for a new laptop, used purely for work emails, the odd word based proposal and the usual internet browsing. With a budget of £300 a Chromebook seems the obvious option. Question is how much difficulty will I have opening office based stuff (word, excel) on one and do the have bluetooth? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Minecraft is owned by Microsoft. So they want to discourage people from using Chromebooks...
Or they want people to buy the PC version for £20, instead of just getting the Android version for £7.
