ive just started a job out in dubai and set myself up a skype account to call and text home, Now the text function works a treat. I can use the chat function but everytime i try to make a call it connects but there is no sound from my end or the other.

I have checked the settings and made a test call which shows all is fine. Tho its not.

Now i know the UAE try to put blockers on skype and that may be an issue but other people are not having this problem and are getting on fine.

Any ideas. Tried to get onto the help function on skype but the internet blockers have stopped all my attempts. 😡

I've a buddy in Qatar - He never shows as being 'in' on Skype - but if I 'ping' him it works fine. Could it be a sound card setup problem?

If it's not your set up maybe a VPN is the answer $15/month

Having spent time in Dubai I'd bet that voip calls are being blocked, probably for commercial and/or censorship reasons.

If that's the case, set up a VPN and just get past the blocking with SSL. It might add a touch of lag to things, but you should still be ok...

Not much help with the original question, but I do sometimes use Skype through a VPN, and it works OK.

My Mum couldn't use skype in the UAE (she was in Abu Dhabi). It's blocked over there... though as the others say, there are ways around it.

Out of interest, why are the UAE blocking Skype? It's not as if they block telephone calls is it? Is it because they want their telecomms (BT equiv)company to pocket the cash?

as far as im aware its because there are 2 phone companies here owned by one company. And they want the monopoly.

Im sure its more complicated than that but so far thats what i have been hearing.
