I'm wanting to set up some kind of live chat thing on my website and have found qwebirc (via http://5by5.tv/live) which makes it easy to place a "chat" box on my site. I've then set up a room on irc.freenode.net and started testing.
I can kick and ban users, but is there a way to delete messages if someone writes something nasty? Or how about a swear filter. Many Googles hasn't helped me.
Blimey!
I did not realise IRC still existed. Takes me back to 1993/1994.
It's for the cool kids.
MindAlign, which is fairly popular in some institutions, is IRC based I think.
IRC doesn't have swear filters or the ability to delete messages as the clients only see what's been posted in real time so nothing from before they join a channel and as the messages are "stored" on the client not the server you can't edit backwards.
For swearing filters, your only option would be to run a bot (say, like pupette) which booted or muted people (if you have a moderated channel) for swearing. Honestly though, just rule with an iron fist and people will soon get the idea after a few bans.
