I'm thinking about getting Sky in my new house, getting a bit baffled by all the options so wondered if anyone could shed some light.

I have an HD ready TV, if I get a standard Sky+ box, can I still watch the freebie HD channels in HD?

The HD+ box is the same price as the standard Plus box, but comes with free installation at the moment. Can I use the HD box without having to pay the extra £9.75 per month extra for the HD package? Or is it worth the extra?

Cheers!

You can get free to air HD channels like BBC, but not the HD versions of Sky 1 etc.

No idea if it is worth the extra as I decided against it.

EDIT - only if you have the HD box of course. And I assume they will only give you a HD box if you subscribe to their HD package.

you need the HD box - i suspect the price for the HD box is based on you paying that extra 9.75 under contract for at least a year

I thought so. Is the standard box going to be obsolete in a couple of years?

I wouldn't be concerned with anything being obsolete, the rate of refresh in the industry means that even the latest offering will soon be obsolete.

Standard definition will be around for some time yet.

No, I've not looked into it but I need Sky Sports as part of the package. I'm assuming I'll have to stick with Sky to get that...

Is that online Ton? Or do I have to ring and quote a code?

If you've got the HD box, can you downgrade the service after the initial contracted period and still use the same box for standard def?

The Sky HD quality is good, but not sure if the content is worth the extra £10 a month tbh.

Its ok if you pay the top whack for everything, but if you subscribe to a basic channel package the HD selection is also reduced.

For that sort of cash, if you have a blu ray player, you could sign up to a number of unlimited rental deals and pick your content accordingly.

Also if you are using sky+ with HD recordings you will soon fill up the hard drive with content.
