[#910548]

Gonna have to keep in contact with my wife when she is at home after an operation and can thus do so easily by skype for free. I want to get her a cheap wi-fi (best if not a mobile with wi-fi unless cheap). Most of the netgear/belkin ones are not in production anymore.

Anyone got any other ideas - need a portable phone I can phone from my computer to her on wi-fi for free 🙂 Pref via skype 🙂

cheapest iPod touch? not sure if that would qualify as "cheap" for you - but with a mic, the correct app and the latest version of the operating system I understand you can use them for Skype calls in a wifi hotspot

plus she then gets an ipod touch as well - openening up a world of browsing, music , games etc for her to enjoy from her sickbed 🙂

I was thinking about £40 actually 😉 I have an iphone but the skype app only works if you have it on i.e. d.t. apple background run mode limitation. So no go I think on that one 😉

3rd party apps dont run in the background so you have to have the app running all the time for it to work!

(apologies for thread hijack)

I'm going to be abroad for a few months next year. People have recommended keeping in touch by using a wifi mobile with Skype or similar, which I can use to call landlines in the UK.

Has anyone tried this? What mobile/ software did you use?

yup - I have an iphone with skype - you can use skype out (1 country monthly fee) for very little to landline or free if iphone to computer 🙂 I was in Krakow 2 weeks ago and worked very very well - was taking to my wife for about 1 hr I think and used 15 p of credit - call quality was very very good IMHO 🙂

What you really want is a DualPhone, which you can use as a normal phone and a skype phone logged into your account. It has it's own base station that is connected directly into the router so won't use any WiFi bandwidth too.

I use a Skype Europe subscription and SkypeIn to make people think I am in London, when I am actually hiding in the south of Spain. It even diverts to my Spanish mobile 🙂
