At least Photoblucket haven't blocked thumbnail linking. So still usable for selling stuff

Using the pgotobucket app, never had a problem before, but now when I piste in the IMG URL, I just get this
[img] http://s237.photobucket.com/user/ken7994/media/IMG_20140826_222436_zpsnifbma6c.jpg.html ][IMG] http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/ken7994/IMG_20140826_222436_zpsnifbma6c.jp g" target="_blank">http://s237.photobucket.com/user/ken7994/media/IMG_20140826_222436_zpsnifbma6c.jpg.html ][/img]

It's like the way too much text there, or is this the problem everyone else is having?

Edit - oh right, it works...... 😳

On Google + if you link the pics off your home page you don't need to use tinyurl. Here's the same pic with and without tiny:
The problem with 'testing' is that once you've seen the image on Photobucket, it's stored to your browser's cache. After that it'll most likely appear for you on the forum (your browser is displaying the cached image) but it may be blocked for everyone else. Of course you could try another browser to make sure. But that's why I wouldn't trust the 'Preview' option here.
At least that's my understanding.

Yeah, but from the posts being made it seems some people aren't even getting that far.

To check whether the image works, there's no need to use another browser (if you're already using Chrome), just use incognito mode to avoid caching - it's a bit tricky doing that with preview though as you need to be logged in to use that. You still have 15 minutes to edit though, so no excuse at all for a succession of posts within that timeframe.

Right, sorry. Should have been clearer: when you press the IMG button on here it (annoyingly) already has "http://" in the little text box.

You want to delete that before pasting in the "Direct link" otherwise you'll end up with two of them ( http://http://) which won't work.

make sense?

..if you link the pics off your home page

What homepage? My photos are in Googlephotos albums, not Google+

But then Preview and Post would you give the same erroneous results, no?

Yes sorry I wasn't completely clear. You are right. But at least if you post (not preview) then you can check that your image works on another browser or another service.

I've never bothered with deleting the supplied "http://" as it comes highlighted in the popup so if you do CTRL-V it gets overwritten automatically. Maybe jonny is clicking on the box first to remove the highlighting? Not that I'm sure what the point of the "http://" in the box is - does that ever provide a useful function?

Just had another e-mail from Photobucket telling me I need to upgrade for 3rd party hosting to work....

$399/yr!! HA HA.

This can't be doing them any good. Time to delete/download images and use something else.
Photobucket has been going down the pan for a couple of years now anyway - the mobile app remained usable, but access from a desktop; forget it!!

How did providing free image hosting benefit them?

I guess from ad revenue when people go onto the website to upload the photo and get absolutely bombarded with a shit storm of adverts?

Dunno.

The thing is, they've gone from telling their customers 'it's all free' to telling their customers 'it's $400' in one fell swoop; £309 a year at current exchange rate, or almost £26/month.
I would have considered paying for their service had it been reasonable & perhaps inline with other photo services.
But I pay $25 annually for the 'pro' version of Flickr (which I am not even sure is necessary anymore) which (and I never thought I'd say this) is a much nicer user experience.

For me, £26/month is not a reasonable fee to charge....for comparison,
My phone contract is £13/month and gets me 600mins, 8Gb data and unlimited texts.
Zwift is only £8/month.
Spotify is only £10/month and gets me access to as much music as I could ever listen to.....

I doubt it, how would they take money from you if you haven't given them your a/c details?

i've had the a/c so long I don't remember if there was ever a need to provide any!

I think I'll cancel anyway as a means of voicing disapproval

Sooo.. 3 Pages of people posting photos that don't show and the alternatives are:

Postimage
Flickr
Google+

I'm looking for something with Albums like Photobucket had, so I can group stuff. I'll have to dust off my Flickr account!

Hopefully this shows

This is from imgur which lets you have albums. There's a dropdown box that gives you various links you can use including one for BB type forums.

Google+

Google's a bit of a faff to hotlink and from experience an image may initially work but some time later it stops working. The links are now dynamic I think and expire.

I'll give this one a go (had to use dev tools to inspect the HTML to grab the link).

See if it stays up.

Had a play with Flickr & Imgur.

Imgur is a lot more simpler & easier to use for posting to forums. Very similar to Photobucket. 😉

Just spent the last while downloading all the pictures off photobucket, and now deleted the account. Cheerio. To be honest, the photobucket site was getting pretty useless anyway ... soo cumbersome when it used to previously be so quick and easy.

Ah well.

I find it really odd that they've effectively committed business suicide here. Why didn't they offer a service for 3rd party hosting that was more affordable? Making it the crazy maximum of hundreds of pounds only is going to make people who can easily afford it go elsewhere as it's just a bit mental. Surely offering say a $10 a month option with limited storage but 3rd party hosting would net them waaaay more money than this completely over the top change?
How come I can still post from photobucket?

They hadn't got around to you yet - you can't any more. Assuming you still could that is - I've just been to page 2 to check my test image and can see it from my normal browser where it's cached (or I'm logged into PB so it lets me), but in incognito mode I get the PB ransomware image (I did check in incognito mode when I first posted and it still worked then).

Time to get around to downloading/transferring any pics I want to keep then before they do make that awkward.

I suppose I can understand their motivation if they're making no money from hotlinking, but then as you point out going about it this way they're just going to lose all their "customers". I'm not quite sure who they want/are going to keep who previously had free accounts - I can't believe anybody with a free account wasn't using it for hotlinking given there are far better (less ad laden) alternatives for other things, so effectively they've just got rid of everybody with a free account, and presumably they were still making money from them when they log in and see the ads? Maybe they've not noticed there are other (better) free options for hotlinking - like many my PB account is just a legacy thing anyway, haven't posted anything new there for ages. Possibly commercial suicide, but it depends what their paying customer base is like.

I've tried Imgur, couldn't figure out how to get it to work.
I can't be arsed to try to get any pics back from Photobucket, they're all still in photos on my Mac and iPhotos, the sad thing is all the broken links in the long-running photo thread on here, I used to really enjoy going back through, now it's just going to be populated with a great many ransom boxes or just broken links.

Could STW patch up the links in the photo thread somehow?

E.g. Could I post a JSON file listing old photobucket links and new working links, then it would update all my old posts?

Feels like about a dozen lines of python, max.

No, impossible. Links will either be dead, or individuals would have to send STW their new locations. Would be a full time job!
