We will be in touch
I'm lucky to be where I want to be. Drove from Edinburgh to Stranraer, ferry to NI, Belfast to a hill farm near Ballymoney yesterday. Lots of ice and snow including traction control at 50mph. Some parts were a close shave but I gotta say overall the roads were in amazing condition given the weather. Well done to all those we keep us moving!
The last 1/2 mile turned out to be entertaining. We spent over 2 hours at -10C getting up the last hill to our destination. This involved me giving up pretty quickly in a rwd laden with pressies. We rang a cousins doorbell (after 11) and he gladly got out of bed, helped us transfer all the pressies to his car and then failed to get up the hill in his vw. So he called his mate with a 4wd. Pressie transfer again. That got stuck - not going up but coming back down.
My wife decided to walk. But male machoism had got a grip. A fried with a tractor was called. That didnt go well. We decided to just get the overnight bags / clothes up the hill. A call to someone else with a quad bike, the smell of 2 stroke oil, and still we couldnt get up!
It ended up with 5 guys on this hill using the quad to move the essential bags on the easy bits then "sherpa-ing" the bags on the really steep bits.
The quad had to be pushed on the steepest parts.
The cars, jeep and tractor got rescued today and Santa is on his way. I'm so glad to be back. Looks like we cant leave the house til Sat at the very earliest!
We do this trip most years and this was the closest shave yet. Some day its going to get the better of us.
I was impressed by the help of people we've never met when I'm sure they had much better things to do.
Anyone else had some hassle?
Oh and happy Christmas!
That's some community spirit. Can I come for new year?
I drove down from Edinburgh to north Norfolk on Sunday night. The roads were clear despite lots of snow all the way down. The only hinderance was the rural end - just had to take it slow but of course there are no hills to tackle.
Miss K was off to her parents last night and flew from Edinburgh to Luton with a short delay but up until the afternoon it was looking very unlikely.
And happy xmas to you too.
Wooo, just started a 12 hour snow desk shift for the HA its going to be a fun xmas day....glad you got to where you were going ok though.
couldashouldawoulda, whereabouts near Ballymoney? My in-laws farm is on the hills above Finvoy, I've done the Xmas trip up that way many times before. We're missing it this year, sounds like interesting conditions though!
Burts - Were at Glarryford near Dunloy. 10" + of snow everywhere. It's so deep that the its over the tops of the kids wellies so they dont even want to go out in it anymore 🙁
Had 2 adrenaline-pumping trips already, Edinburgh to Gairloch (slow from Blair Atholl, 15mph from Kinlochewe to Gairloch in heavy snow) then back down to stay 1 night in Sanquhar, nr Dumfries, on the way to the S.O.'s folks near Bury - roads were ok until we crossed the county line from Lanark into D+Galloway, whereupon the surface went from clear to 2" frozen snow for the last 10 mls...
Still, being the only guests in a michelin star hotel has it's benefits!
Well I got let out the hosptial and have just got home!!
