My brother in Australia has said I can have his 3g iPhone for free but it's currently network locked to Telstra over there. As I'd want to swap over to O2 I'd need to unlock it and telstra are very expensive.

Never pay for this stuff.
I presume O2 can only unlock phones supplied by them - this is an Australian Telstra supplied phone so I presume jailbreaking/unlocking is my only option (or pay Telstra $150)
