Thought after several years I would get my video sorted - all on memory card and DVD

Loaded the memory cards to laptop and sorted clips into folders

Tried to import using the Panasonic supplied software - wont do it, will only import
From memory card or DVD . And you can't save from it to the hard drive - only to card / disc. Also, I couldn't seem to merge clips from 2 cards to 1 consolidated folder

So thought I'd try windows movie maker - this imported sound but not video, I think because the clips are meg ts format,
Whatever that means

So anyone know what to do / what software to buy which will import mpeg ts files from laptop, edit them, then export back to laptop?

Thanks!

I've used Avid's video editing software and it's complex but recently got a copy of Adobe Premier Elements, obviously not the pro version but for simple multi channel editing without too much over complicated structure its fine.
Ebay lists it for about 60 quid.

I'm knackered today so can't quite compute exactly what your issue is.

If you want to convert file types and do some simple editing then check out Format Factory. It's free and works damn fine.

I just tried that format factory and it doesnt seem to work for me. Are there any other file converters that are any good?

Streamclip and it's varients are usually good.

You need to convert to an uncompressed editing format to edit then output to whatever you like. It can take some experimenting to find a natively editable format for what ever software you are using. The codecs you have in your machine are important too. You can download these too.

If it is on DVD is it already compressed and playable on a dvd player? or is it a file from the camera? You can rip DVD's but it's a footer. (PITA)

My solution to this problem is to only use AVCHD or Final Cut Native Cameras or Mini DV tape.

MPEG Streamclip should convert your files and it's free. For editing then Premiere is probably the easiest option for Windows. Not my favourite software but it's really easy to use.

What format are they, MTS? If so Premiere or iMovie will read them (well they do with mts
Files from my GF1).
