Just wanted to ask - do you send "condolences cards" to your clients after you've put their pets down ?

Only today I received a card (with a picture of two cats) from my vet saying how her and the staff were thinking of me, and that "Ernie was such a lovely cat". He was put down a week yesterday.

It seems a bit peculiar to me, and not least because it's not a vets which I have ever used much.

Just wondered if it was normal practice ?

They probably have some kind of practice management software database thingy that just does it automatically. The old man is a vet and their sopftware does all this stuff, sends reminders and the like..

We lost a cat (albeit suddenly when in there for being not very well, but supposedly on the mend) a few years back and had a card from the vet. I just thought it was a nice touch at the time - especially when the vet had seen how upset we were about it.

But I dunno how commonplace it is.

Sorry to hear about Ernie - had he been ill?

Oh ok fair enough, I've never had one before. It seemed a little strange to me, specially over a week later.

Yeah, Ernie had kidney failure. Miss him badly, got two other cats, but Ernie was the best cat ever. Without a doubt.

Never had one when they've put my dogs to sleep, a thank you card for the money would have been something at least. Vets know what to charge don't they, sorry not trying to distract from your loss.

Usually get a card from either of the two vets we use when one of the carpet sharks has been put to sleep, it's a nice touch.

But Ming, does your vet sign with their first name and put a kiss on the bottom ?

That took me back a bit, apart from receiving the card. It's not exactly what I expected from a professional person who isn't really a mate - I saw her for the first time about 6 weeks.

Still, I'm not complaining - she's a right little darling and apparently recently divorced. I was just taken aback by it a bit and was wondering if it was normal protocol.

BTW thanks trailmonkey. Ernie was indeed a great pet/mate/comforter. Unfortunately the little bugger choose to get quite seriously ill the day before my mother died - just when I needed his comforting and reassuring purring/face rubbing the most ! He hung on for another 16 days before I and the vets could see that there was no hope and I was forced to do one last favour for my old mate. I was particularly proud of the fact that I was there with him at the end, I've never had the courage to do that before, but I owed it to him. And I'm glad I did too, it wasn't that bad and I would do again in the future now.

I will often send cards to owners after they have lost a pet. Don't usually put kisses on them though! It is usually done for long standing owners or ones that you have seen a lot of recently ie if been treating intensively for the previous couple of weeks. We don't use the practice management system to send them though I'm sure it could do that.

Most people like the contact, if anyone indicates they didn't like a note would be made not to send anything again.

Sorry to hear about Ernie. We would all claim not to have favourites but some cats are special.

I think it's a great idea to do what you did. It's the one thing I regret about Java - not being there with him (he went in a heartbeat though) - I wish he'd died at home with us and his mate Oscar. He seemed so bloody unhappy spending nights at the surgery. With loads of animals barking and shit. And no matter what cats ever live with us, Java was the best ever (in our world anyway).

Didn't realise you'd recently (?) lost your mum too ernie. Sorry 'bout that too.
