My daughter (16) has her first real job in hospitality. It's a place that is unique, so much so, it's been on tv. She works most weekends in front and back of house and has been enjoying it, for the most part.

Xmas has brought a challenge to all who work in the place. They were expecting tips to be distributed to staff for Xmas; they put all tips into a jar for the year and expected a dishing out for Xmas.

Nothing cash, just a small gift (couple of quid)

I understood this to be illegal these days.

She's reluctant to rock the boat asking to see the employer's Tips policy, so what can she do? Is there a anonymous Tips hotline for shaming Tips Scrooges?

What to do?

Just casually ask the boss. "What happened to the tips we've been saving all year?"

If they give some excuse that means they're not getting them, just reply "oh, I thought the law said tips had to go to staff now."

Learning how to stand up for yourself at work is a useful life skill that she'll be calling in for the next half century or so.

Best tip? Phrase everything as a question.

att.Xoo9MPKkjGOAVotJfIU5tX7Xg3D4BO9GDGBkZh4LPN0.jpeg We always ask when leaving restaurants whether the staff receive a share of tips before we pay more than the bill.
However….

Great tips!

In all seriousness, they are great tips.

Hmm, when she's ready to ditch it, the above may be useful. The last girl to ask why they didn't get a break now gets no shifts.

It's all very well having a law, and guidelines, but who/what enforces it?

It sounds a lot like 'this is how it should be' and fingers in ears when it isn't.

now gets no shifts

zero hours, then?  I wonder if that makes the law inapplicable somehow
