Or amateurs who've done paying work...

What's the situation with regard to images repeating in, say, pamphlets or house magazines? Is there a "royalty" situation that could be exploited?

Depends on what was specified in the contract.

All depends on what rights you sold with the photo.

Have a look at the options eg http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/corporate/licenseinfo.aspx#

What I mean is - do photographers get paid "repeat fees" or the like on sale or distribution of their images?

It depends. If the contract included passing the rights to the client, then the client can use them for whatever they want.
If the contract was for licensed use in certain publications / websites then they can't.

Hmm.

The firm (it's a tinpot organisation) wants to utilise my amateur talents to take some portraits and the like for publicity.

Perhaps "licensing" and the like is a bit much at this stage of the game.

Thanks.

As above - it depends.

PS tell them to hire a proper photographer. 😛

In general for commercial work we sign a contract and that contract states what the photos can be used for anything falling out side that they cannot use them for.
But in GENERAL there are no "repeat fees".

Ours are something like world wide release (digital) to cover web site usage. Then print usage for just UK or and Europe. Or similar.

Anything for TV or Film would be a BIG NO NO in our release though.
Hope that helps 🙂

If you're doing staff portraits etc then normally they'd get rights to use the photo as many times as they like. I've done our work ones, CEO etc, and they get used endlessly for every press release, internal and external comms etc.

Meet our new CEO:
