I mean old guitars. There's plenty of old folk 🙂

I have an old electric bass that has literally been sitting around unused for decades. I've always assumed it was a no-name special and basically worthless. I plugged it into an amp the other day and it doesn't work.

So I chucked it on ebay last night and have had a lot more interest than I expected. Can anyone help identify it, or date it, or give me a clue what it's worth ?

No idea.
Looks more modern than a 60's Brit copy, possibly Japanese?

Thumb rest and big headstock say 70's?

People pay stupid amounts for old stuff, it'd definitely be worth getting it checked out.

The shape is Jaguar so post 1965. What's the scale length? If it's short scale it's a Jaguar copy.

The machine heads look like they are early 70s Japanesse. Have a look at some 70s aria basses.

I've never ssen pickups like those. The bridge cove looks like an Aria but inverted.

If it plays well (neck truss rod works, no twist), frets ok then 100e plus. If you can get it to work - check the resistance of the pickups (expect about 15kohms) if they are ok add 50e and if you can get the switchgear to work too then more like 200e.

Take the neck off, you might find the name of the builder marked there.

I'd fix it and play it, it looks great.

Was thinking Teisco, it's a lot like an EB100 I worked on ages back, but it's also quite a lot not like it...

Can't post a pic from my phone, but my teisco tulip has the same dark wood Finger rest, same tuners, same bridge cover thingy.

Scale length ? The dark bit is 21", if that's that ? And 200e ? Get out 😯

Anyway, spurred by that info I had a poke around, and it does all work, the springy bit inside the jack socket was just a bit wonky. Plugged in and everything works now ! Slight crackle from controls but they all work fine. Quite chuffed.

I can see 20 frets so a 21" fret board is short scale - so a Jaguar copy of some sort with two single coils in the neck and bridge position rather than the Fender's single coil bridge and "p" middle.

I'd drop round myself and try it if I weren't 1000km away. There's a following for these old Japanese instruments (if it is 70s as I think it is) as they often play well and have distinctive sounds. You need to try the classifieds on guitar/bass forums rather than e-bay or gumtree. I 'd like to try it because the neck is unusually narrow at the body and the cut gives excellent access to the 20th fret which my current bass doesn't.

Anyhow as far as I can see from your pic it's all original, no repairs, in nice condition with unscarred original paint, and plays. Obviously it's only worth what some is prepared to pay but I've seen things like that on leboncoin.fr at around 200e and they've soon gone - with new strings and everything shiny a little more but perhaps not enough to cover the effort and cost of new strings.

There's one similar to yours at the bottom of this page, the owner doesn't know what it is though.

Really appreciate the help !

I've been Googling and not having much luck, but the pickups & truss rod nut cover are very similar to THIS, a 1973 Epiphone guitar (not bass). I think you're dead right on it being seventies Japanese.
