Long story short... The gearstick on my 2008 Fiat Ducato has just started, well, flopping.

It feels completely loose, moves freely forward and back with zero resistance. Some resistance side to side but can't select any gears.

Too late to do anything tonight (stuck in the Lakes, no tools, dwindling mobile signal) but any idea what might have happened so I know what to expect when the RAC turns up tomorrow?

Ta.

Sounds like a linkage has become unlinked

Agree with the above gear cables popped off the selector arm.

Thanks. Are these things major? Can they be repaired roadside?

If it's similar to my combo 1.3cdti which has the Fiat engine, reach down at the rear of the engine central area, you will find a black plastic piece dangling down (hopefully). There will be a knuckle that the other end push fits onto either at gearbox actuator end or lever end.....just pop it back on.....it may hold for a short time....it may pop off within minutes. eBay suppliers will be your cheapest solution for a replacement but word of warning, the metal ones I simply could not press onto the knuckles. I purchased an overhaul kit instead which contained another plastic linkage and that popped on nice and easy.

Not sure I'm qualified for all that! ;o)

This is the Ford Transit engine, if it helps?

The linkages will be different but similar.....maybe bolt through type....from where the gear stick is mounted look in engine bay where linkages come forwards towards the gearbox....look for any metal rods that are drooping down....best I can tell you without seeing it I front of me....

The squaffle bar is held onto the orbital shaft by a clevice pin, these pins can wear quite badly until they fail. Did it happen suddenly?

MM. Having just google images there's a lot of options that show a twin cable operated system....but they all have linkage points......its just seeing them that will be your issue. Sorry can't assist further.

You could probably put the car in gear (with levers at gearbox) and start it with the clutch pressed. I done this on a C5 a number of years ago but that was on the flat and only a couple of miles to the garage.

Yep, happened pretty suddenly I guess.

I have no idea what I'm doing with engines (I was under the impression they worked by magic) so one for the RAC in the morning I reckon.

It's not the clevice pin then, unless it fell out or broke. (doubtful)
